I read the manual multiple times, but can't seem to find out if there's a setting that does a wash and a dry together without me first having to select wash, then after it's done, select dry.

Or does the dry cycle include a wash?

Which model do you have? Mines is pretty straight forward choose wash settings, choose dry settings and hit play...

Are you not overloading it as the dry cycle is usually half the wash?

If you turn the knob towards your required wash setting, and then press the dryer button.. it adds the drying time to the total time.. normally around 4 hours.. then you just press 'start'

I have the same one I think.

This also confused me. So it is not possible to only use the dry cycle without first doing a wash?

You can. If you turn the knob to tag right and just select the drying settings. I'm not at home so I can't confirm

Well it means I don't have to go outside to hang the washing and wait a day or more for it to dry now that it's winter.

now that i think a little more, they are probably fairly efficient.
i have a pair of old skool speedqueens (1 washer 1 dryer) that are about 5yrs old, back then people were not too fickle about power consumption of domestic appliances i guess.

Have a Samsung combo as well...never tried washing and drying in one go....usually wash, double spin cycle...hang out for a bit...then pop in the dryer...pretty economical...electricity bill goes up by 100 bucks during the winter months...
