Amobia will be adding me to their trials. Jhb - Midrand area. R499 for the SIP adaptor. No monthly charges while its on trial. Pay for call costs only: http://pbx03.amobia.com/tariffs.php .

I am on the 2mbps Uncapped option.

Nice. First impression of the SIP adapter is that it's awesome :) I'm making and receiving calls every day and not a single disconnect.

Telkom has left the (my) building..............

Interesting, if I read that correctly, it is more expensive to make a local call to a Telkom line than it is to make a call to Canada  Must be those pescy interconnect rates.

Hmm, this Amobia sounds to me only like an alternative to Neotel. And even a big player like Neotel/Tata manages wireless internet in the worst way, so I don't have much hope for Amobia to do any better.

My advice: Hands Off wireless technologies! Stick to ADSL.

Ive been with them for a few weeks and can honestly say that their service is exceptional! Phone them with a query, they take your number and phone you back... quickly! I phoned the accounts lady and she even recalled my name from the application form... I dont want them to grow too big, I like them just the way they are, so please people, rather go adsl, cause these guys are just awesome!

I get a ping of around 32-34ms and d/l speeds of about 3.6mbps... upload about 0.42mbps...

Couple of questions if you don't mind.
Do you have a capped or uncapped account?
Do you use News Servers at all, and what are the speeds like?

Im on the capped service. The uncapped is with mweb and I just dont like them.

I also only use image bank websites to buy photos, some forums and general surfing. My gaming takes up the bulk of the bandwidth, but with 8gb a month it should be fine. Its only R60 to top up, which is pretty good for wireless imo.

News servers?

I stay in Ruimsig, which is part Roodepoort.

I'm in the same area. What package you using. Do you mind posting a speedtest? How do you rate the service

I am thinking of getting this as a back-up to my ADSL...anyone in Cape Town CBD using this? Speedtest please?

I sent an email to them, hopefully they can install this at our building.

Im on the capped 3mbps option. Since I mainly use it for gaming the latency was most important and because the capped is unshaped it was the natural choice for me. I just topped it up to 8gb bandwidth a month. Herewith a speedtest that I literally did now...

Their service... astonishingly good. I am as happy as can be with them.

So, does anyone have a setup like the one below (or know whether it will work) and what has to be configured on my Netgear DG834N ADSL Router.

Amobia Box ----Ethernet Cable---> NetgearDG834 ----Ethernet Cable---> PC
+++Wireless+++----> Laptop

Ah ok thanks, then I suspect it would be the same service experience as I currently have with my MWEB uncapped account.

hmm now how to explain a news server... let me not try, but you can have a read here: http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/

I have a feeling you will battle with them if you use it on the uncapped option via mweb.

Im on the capped option and anything from easynews downloads pretty fast.

Yup I think so as well, and soz, I think I misread your question earlier. I use Supernews and Astraweb for those really old bits of news.

WOWZA

You guys just made me a believer, Im gonna phone them and ask if a Km or 5 would make a difference out of the coverage ring.. Seeing I can see the yellow circle ending right before my suburb lol

GOT TO LOVE MURPHY!

What was the max amount of capped you guys used a month on this service. Guess 50GB is probably abusing it in their eyes?

I doubt it. I spoke to one of their reps who told me their uncapped accounts are provided by MWEB, so your experience should be the same.
