So, does anyone have a setup like the one below (or know whether it will work) and what has to be configured on my Netgear DG834N ADSL Router.

Amobia Box ----Ethernet Cable---> NetgearDG834 ----Ethernet Cable---> PC
+++Wireless+++----> Laptop

I'm pretty sure it will work fine if you are able to select router mode on that Netgear modem. That will allow Amobia to assign out DHCP through your ADSL router and onto any devices plugged into the remaining three ports.

Or just get a four port switch and let Amobia manage your network

Thanks for the feedback, but...... - convenience won out in the end - the thought of all the bother with arranging for home visit, then installation, yada yada - called Telkom, called MWeb - 2 hours later running at 4Mbps - no fuss, no mess....

For sure but at what cost per month? I pay R799 for 3 meg uncapped. My phone bill through Amobia for the last TWO months was only R100. I'll only consider going back to ADSL if LLU happens and it works out cheaper to do so!

How far have you used service without receiving "over-use" letters?

jacksback, I wonder if you will do me a favour - I've recently had Amobia install the 3 meg uncapped service and am struggling mightily with speeds and ping times. Would you mind doing a speedtest and ping test (Speedtest.net, Pingtest.net) and posting the results so that I have a benchmark to compare against.

These are all local and they are pretty horrific

That is shocking. Maybe ask them to change your frequency and or channel.

I would also suggest dropping down to the 2 meg uncapped package if they can't fix it with a fequency change. Good Luck

I currently pull 400-600gb a month and have never received a letter.

Redcliff, I'll do that tonight.

You get that with torrents, news server, or http downloads ? Very interested to hear your answer.

Ah cool thanks, so from your answer I assume the shaping that might take place is not half as bad as MWEB's ADSL shaping ATM.

They're pretty quick to respond so expect a call any day now. I was surveyed and up and running within a week. Remember also that they willing to take 50% for the equipment now and the remainder in month 2.

Packet loss is just unacceptable esp. With gaming. I'm with klear and during the cod4 + 5 years my ping was tits macgee with rock steady 60 ping but since cod6 it's all gone to **** with regards to performance - Time Outs and Ping spikes...wisps are such bullshysters...

Small update - Amobia have lowered their topup fees and given some extra bandwidth to existing packages.

From their website...

More value added
Amobia gives 50% more bandwith - FREE - While slashing Broadband 1GB top-up prices from R69 to R49.

They really need to lower their installation cost somehow

Just noticed that you are in Pretoria. I'm in Cape Town and it only took a week to be fully up and running. Not to worry though because I've mailed the CEO of the Cape Town branch and asked him if he could try and get your application expedited.

Hopefully they give you the outcome of your survey today.
