I have this strange problem on Windows HexPee. When I play audio/video through winamp, wmp, vidomi etc it all plays and sounds fine. As soon as i play anything in iTunes or Quicktime, there is a very loud 'cracklehiss' over the soundtrack. I have tried reinstalling both products, updated sound drivers, reinstalled windows and anything else I can think of in the settings of quicktime. Has anyone had this problem and possibly have a solution other than buying a sound card?

I would very much like to use iTunes not only for my Pod but for listening to the music through the surround sound.

Thanks

Sound: Onboard AC'97 Realtek ALC655 with Intel 82801EB ICH5 chipset

P.S. I have also tried different speakers just in case.

I would recommend buying a decent sound card.

Quality is way better than onboard, especially if your gonna use it for listening to music.

I could be wrong, but every single onboard sound card I heard so far doesn't come close to a good seperate sound card.

Go and download the latest codec's. All of the app's use different codecs. Worked for me.

sell the pod and buy zune.
because anything relating to Quicktime has this uncanny way of getting my back up.

Ploempie, I've seen alot of references to the sound problem with iTunes 7.0 (especially on Windows).

Let us know if 7.0.1 made a difference

It's strange that it only does that in Quicktime in Itunes, but I had a similar problem with our P4 pc, it's also an Intel motherboard and if I'm not mistaken it's the ICH5 chipset, not sure about the model though, I went onto the Intel site, downloaded the latest Windows flashable BIOS and extracted it to a folder C:\BIOS The reason I put it on the root is sometimes the system fails to read a long directory name.

I closed all the apps, Antivirus, spyware, anything running and started the BIOS flash procedure. It started, restarted the system, flashed the BIOS and when the pc started up the sound was fixed. Sometimes I can still hear a faint crackling sound, but it's hardly as noticable as before.

Make damn sure you choose the correct BIOS for your motherboard, it's best to ask a friend who knows these things to help you if you have doubts. Read the instructions carefully, sometimes you have to disable Hyperthreading etc. before flashing.

Hope you get it fixed ;) :p

Thanks teraside. I have already flashed the bios to the latest one when I upgraded the cpu recently.

Talk about delayed gratification. How many people do you know with a Zune? Mines sitting next to my PS3 and my PC running a gold master Windows Vista.

Updated iTunes to 7.0.1 and sound problem is sorted. Thanks guys.
