So I'm starting a new job on Monday and I need a new one (my old Absa one is totally messed :p

Anyway, I do online shopping now and then and I heard somewhere that you get this saving account or whatever that also acts as a credit card (without funds of course) but I have no idea of where to get this.

Basically I want a "empty - clean" credit card which I'll use a my standard saving account or similar.

Any suggestions on what bank offers something like this...I don't care if it's FNB, Standard or whatever

My new check account from Standardbank and now Nedbank gives you a card that actually looks like it can work as a credit card also if there is funds in it. Never tried it though.

It has a CVV number on the back

Dono if that is what you mean.

Standard Bank has something called AutoPay which I believe is a facility to allow individuals to pay for stuff online instead of using their credit card. It is like using a debit card at a shop vs a credit card.

Something like that?

Hmmm, this sound like the right one...maybe I must go to Standard Bank tomorrow and just explain what I want :/

Yeah, but the site you shop from has to support the Autopay feature (such as Kalahari and Take 2 I think) but international shops are a no go AFAIK.

I think StandardBank is way too expensive if you are actually working. Remember, if they give you "inclusive" transactions for R150 p/m, ask yourself whether you'll actually use 15 cheques a month??

Anycase, I am on FNB Gold, have a gold VISA cheque card that works just like a credit card. Has a CCV number on the back. Also have a gold credit card.

Their silver account gives you the more standard debit card.

Used to be at Nedbank before they had their student offering, but also got a VISA cheque card there (and not just a debit card).

One thing I am not sure of is whether a cheque card that works like a CC also gives you some insurance against fraud from online transactions? I know VISA has insurance for these kind of activities, and I got a phone call the other day from FNB asking whether I had just spent R40,000 in Italy... Needless to say, I didn't, and they just canceled the transaction without costing me a thing.

I have a FNB SIlver cheque account, which came with a VISA cheque card. Unsless you have an overdraft on the account, it works as a debit card. I've also had an incident where there were fraudulent charges to the card, and you follow the same procedure as you would with a regular credit card.

My main reason for having this cheque card is for online transactions and flight tickets - I've never had a problem. It works like a credit card, only difference is that you don't have to pay anything off...

Great to hear! Also didn't know the silver one came out with a Standard VISA (and not VISA Electron), so my bad. :)

It works exactly like a credit card (to you) - you can even use it online or overseas.
