I am looking for a psychiatrist for a single consultation to satisfy my medical aid's requirements.

The costs I have been given for a one hour consult are:
R1600
R1100
R1400

Seems excessive.

These prices are claimed to be medical aid rates. Does anyone have any idea what the Discovery code for such a consultation is?

Would it be worth it for me to seek help from a subsidised institution such as TARA? Or any others that can be suggested? I'm happy to pay a more reasonable R400-R600. Three times that though is just not on.

Looks normal for specialists. Most doctor appointments are 15 minutes and cost about R300 = R1200 per hour. Lawyer and IT Professional rates are about that too. Maybe not R1600 but certainly between R1100 and R1400.

dappled, a friend of mine used to work at Tara. Will check with her whether you can see a psychiatrist there as an outpatient, and what the rates might be like. Will let you know.

Psychiatrist or psychologist? Seems quite expensive for a psychologist-weekly-therapy-session type thing.

But couches don't, usually, hand out mind altering psychotropic narcotics that your medical aid pays for !

Thanks chiskop.

Yes must be a psychiatrist, not a psychologist. Medical aid says!

It will only be a once-off session, thank god!

As you may have noticed by my aggression in another thread, i am in need of a psychiatrist to control my rage :)D kidding on that). But yes, ridiculous, which is why I am looking for some kind of subsidised mental health facility. I hope chiskop can help with info from Tara, all other google leads go nowhere or to dead or outdated info :/

R1100 an hour? man, i'm in the wrong field......

They study for like 25 years though. 12 for school, 7 to be a doctor, 5 to be a shrink (i think it is 5 could be wrong) .. 24 years. Jinne. ...and then they only start to practice being a shrink!

Anything under R1000-00 and you score anything above R1500-00 and you are a fool. And YES, they have to study like 'mad'. No easy field. Did you phone a state institution like Westkoppies, in Pretoria or Donken in Port Elizabeth? The prices there are heavely subsidised. And remember - prepare yourself for more then a visit, depending on the outcome of the first.

LOL @ anger management. I think we are all in need of that :D
Yea i can't see there being much information on the net regarding this.

Waaib i don't think you can really count 12 years for school since we all do that and that aren't studying for that specifically. Still think the consultation fee is a bit outrageous. Health care should be anything but expensive.

I am in jhb, so other provinces are not really an option. Thanks for the pta reference, i will look into that. It will be a once-off visit to make my medical aid happy.

dappled, if you don't mind me asking, why would a medical aid require anyone to see a psychiatrist? I know it's a really personal question and you may not feel comfortable answering, but I'm curious as to under what circumstances they can force a person to do this?

Once I sent Discovery a slice of my finger. They wanted me to go see a psychiatrist.
