Im currently on 56k at home, and i use it to lay online games mostly, recently ive had some problems,i only get bout 5kb worth of speed, meaning my connections is extremly slow,i need to upgrade to a better connection,im currently looking into buying a 3g card and expansion slot (pcmia or whatever) so ican plug my 3g card into my esktop pc,now my question is...

I am not in a 3g coverage zone, only gprs, will i get more than 5kb,i need bout a 10kb constant speed,i know the gprs is at about 41kb,but is that true speed?or is it like the 56k,it says 56kbps but i only get 4 or 5kb,i really need a 10kbps connection contsantly,so yeah will the gprs connect at 41 kb and stay there or will i get the same speed loss as the 56k,like i lose 50kbps,please help!!

Hello Spartan187
Welcome to the forum!

GPRS can go as high as 80 kbps, and EDGE as high as 236 kbps, but the latency can be a killer for online gaming. What kind of pings do you need?

Typical local pings on GRPS/EDGE are around 500-700 ms. 3G/HSDPA goes down to about 200 ms AFAIK.

Spartan187, on your dial-up connection, sure you're not getting bits and bytes confused? A 56k connection = max 56 kilobits per sec (kbps) = 7 kilobytes per sec (kBps), factor of 8 difference. Ditto for the wireless connections - they're usually quoted in kilobits, rather than bytes, per second. So if you need 10 kBps, you'll actually need a connection that can do 80 kbps sustained.

My experience of GPRS vs dial-up is that the bandwidth is pretty similar. Pings can be a lot worse on GPRS though, as ajax pointed out, so it'll depend on the games you want to play.

Hiya and thanks for the replies.

Its to play guild wars mostly,so the gprs actually sucks more than 56k,my isp is extremly slow on the 56k,and i get a ping above 1000ms,and thats on a good day,so i dunno what to do,im dont live in a 3g or edge coverage area,so is adsl a better way to go?
Hows the 192 adsl,is it fast enough to play guild wars without net lag,or not alot i hope?or should i rahter go for the 384 adsl?money is kind of a big factor,i was thinking if the gprs is the same as 56k then i have to go adsl,so i thought i would get 192 with 2 gig shaped, would that make my online gaming smoother than the 56k?cos at the moment its driving me up the wall with a connection speed of 5kb,and thats at its peek,i mostly get between 900bytes and 2kb,so what should i do?
