Finally I got my ADSL. When they installed it they said they will come back with instalation and configuration of soft ware and connections and stuff.

They never did. Now I have to do everything from scratch. Myself.
I have no idea how to do it. I have a Marconi USb modem. The CD they gave me does not have the drivers for the modem. So I downloaded the drivers from the Marconi website. Windows reconized the modem as DynaMite USB Modem, after instalation it's just Your Modem.

The Telkom ADSL PPPoE Client doesn't see the modem or any adapters.

Please help with step-by-step (if possible) configuration of setting up connections and so on. I will be forever thankfull.

For starters toss the Telkom PPPoE stuff and download the one available from this site

http://www.raspppoe.com/

Using the instructions - also found on this site, install and configure the RASPPPoE protocol.
This product works with the standard widows dial-up networking. If this does not help please supply us with more information i.e OS versions, network configs etc.

You'll have to be a little bit more specific about this. To help you, we'll need to know at least which operating system you are using.

Since most people seem to be using some form of it these days, I will assume you are using Windows XP.

If you aren't, I highly recommend you phone your local computer store and have on of their technicians come out and set it up for your. Telkom's PPPoE client is useless, for any Windows other than Windows XP, you need a third party PPPoE client installed.

If you are using some sort of UNIX or "Windows emulated on Linux" kind of operating system, you should not be asking this question, and you should have bought the ethernet modem. [:D]

Windows XP instructions follow:

First thing, you want to uninstall the Telkom PPPoE client. It's bad software and not needed anyway, Windows XP has a built in PPPoE client.

Next, uninstall the modem:

Right click "My Computer"
Chose "properties"
Click the "Hardware" tab.
Click "Device Manager"

Locate the modem, right click on it and click "Uninstall"

Next, install the Marconi drivers, again.

During installation, you might be asked some questions. If you are asked any of the questions listed below, these are the answers you want:

Encapsulation: 1483 Bridged IP LLC (or just Bridged LLC)
VPI: 8
VCI: 35

WAN/LAN mode: LAN mode

You might not be asked all of these, if not. don't worry.

Once this is done, right click on "My Network Places" and click "Properties"

Under "LAN or High Speed Internet" you should now see one or two connections. If your system has an ethernet port (most do), this will be listed as "Local Area Connection", your modem should be listed as "Local Area Connection 2", or if your system has no network adaptor, your modem will be the only connection visible. If you don't see any connections, worry.

Do not close the "My Network Places" window, keep it int he background.

If the modem is listed, make sure it has attained synchronisation with the DSLAM. There should be a new icon in the system tray (right of the task bar, next to the click) that will look like two lights or two arrows. Hover your mouse over these, if you get a message like "startup-training" or "startup-handshake", wait a while. If it does not go away, you don't have sync, phone Telkom.

If it does sync, it should display "DATA" or "SHOWTIME".

If no message is displayed, double click the icons, you should get a status window where the messages will be displayed.

Go back to the "My Network Places" window (which you should have left open)

Now, to the left of the window, click "create a new connection."

Select "connect to the internet."

Select "Broad band internet connection."

Next select "Broadband internet connection that requires me to log in with a username and password." This tells Windows to establish a connection using its built-in PPPoE client.

Follow the instructions and enter your username and password where needed. If you are asked if you want to make the new connection your "Default Connection", answer yes. Keep clicking OK and eventually click "Finish"

Once all this is done, you should see another connection in the "My Network Places" window. This is your ADSL connection. Double click and it should go up within a few seconds.

If it doesn't, double check that you have sync, and that you have the right username and password.

Tip, in many cases the first-line idiot at Telkom support will give you the username in the wrong format.

The correct format is telkomdslNNNNN@dsl512telkomsa.net

The NNNNN represents some random numbers that will be assigned to you. If they give you a username like telkomdsl010101@telkomsa.net, or @dsltelkomsa.net, just substitute dsl512telkomsa.net... this has happened to many people.

If none of this helps, call Telkom.

Sorry, I did have the VCI setting mistyped in the original post. It is indeed 35 and not 3. Thanks Solar.

Thanks alot for the replies. I am indedd Running Windows XP Home Edition. I did as instructed. Uninstalled all the drivers and re-installed the Marconi modem driver. Setting up everything. It seems that there is a network conection running to the modem at 10Mbs and the modem works.

The problem is that when I dail with username and password an error message comes up with "couldn't find host computer".

I also tried that PPPoE client mensioned (RasPPPoE). When running it a error message comes up with "could not find any dail-up devices exposed by the PPP over Ethernet Protocol"

I'll still try getting it right with different settings. Any more tips would be great. Thanks alot.

Thanks alot for the replies. I did everything as instructed. Un-installed all the driver. Re-installed the Marconei Modem Driver. Setting up network connection. Setting up broadband connection. It seems that the network connection is active using the Marconi modem. But when I dail the broadband connection the error message says "could not find the remote computer".

I also tried the RASPPPOE client. An error message comes up with "could not find any dail-up devices exposed by the PPP Over Ethernet Protocol"

Network works but I still can't dail in. Isn't there a place where to enter the dail number Telkom suplied along with the user/pass?

Thanks alot for the replies, I will still try to get it right.

P.S I am indeed running Windows XP Home Edition

Hi MikePiatza

There are no numbers to dial with ADSL. It is a network connection that only requires a username and password.

I unfortunately do not have much experience with the USB modem apart from knowing that is not a good option. Always go for the ethernet DSL router. But that said, I do urge you to make sure the correct driver is installed and that the USB modem gives you confirmation that the DSL line is at least active. There should be a light that stays on and doesn't flicker. Read the manual to see which one.

If the confirmation is not there, then your DSL line is dead! Another way to check would be to see if you can make calls on the line. But note that just because you can call, doesn't mean they created your account correctly.

With WinXP you need to set up a broadband dialup, no other software is required. Create a new dialup, select manual & choose broadband that requires username & password. This should sort you.

Nope.

Leave it blank. Just make sure your VPI and VCI settings are right before trying to connect. VPI should be 8 and VCI should be 35, sorry, I had it wrong in the original post.

Everything seems right .. The VPI and VCI are right. But when I dail the connection it doesn't wanna connect. The line works perfect .. phoned Telkom to ask bout it. Tested it on phone to. But hell .... all this trouble.

Could it maby be coz I have a Local Area Connection also installed on my PC? Just a thought.

The "Local Area Connection" is just Windows' way of seeing your system's network card. That should really have no effect.

Again though, you should not be "dialing" the connection, when setting up the connection, Windows will have an option similar to: "Broadband connection that requires me to log in."

There will be an icon to open the connection, just as with a dial-up, but it is not "dialing", it is just broadcasting for a PPPoE server and once found, establishes a PPPoE connection.

When you "dial" the connection, you should see a dialogue box reading: "Connecting to WAN miniport (PPPoE)", if you see anything else, delete the connection, set it up again and make sure to select the "broadband connection that requires me to log in" option.

I recieved a fax from telkom today. they gave me all the user and pass information aswell as the primary dns and secondary dns. I put in the information but still nothing. I'm getting the feeling that my line is not adsl complient. That when I dail the connection I'm dailing into nothing ... no adsl signal. Will phone Telkom and find answers on Monday. Thanks for all your help.

i know this might sound really silly...

but in you TCP/IP properties for you network connection make sure you're obtaining your ip automatically and dns automatically.
i had a problem on one machine where it just wouldn't connect. i thought it was already obtaining IP automatically (as it usually do my default if i'm not mistaken). as soon as i checked those two boxes my connection started working

Silly question: Is your modem bypassing the ADSL filter? I hope it is, otherwise no ADSL will be available.
