I renewed my car licence disc using the online government system – How it went

I did mine online about 2 weeks ago. I completed the process online on the Wednesday around midday, and received my disc on the Friday morning, no issues or delays whatsoever.

Did it twice so far and got documents within 3 days.
Also got notification that my drivers license is ready!!!

Did the same. First year went smoothly.
Second time i waited 2 weeks for the disk to be delivered.

This really seems like a step in the right direction.

Comparing it to UAE: Everything done on the app except the eye test. I did car license and drivers license.

Car license cost R2000

Eye Test cost R400
Drivers license R1650

Eye Test I had to do in the mall (or I could do it there If I went in person to the license department).
Everything was delivered to my house.

Considering that the postage is free in the UAE I think the pricing here is really good including the courier service.

We just need to get the SpecSavers eye test uploaded and paying for our license card online to be on par (although I think the UAE is ahead of most countries regarding this type of service). And I know people weren't too happy with the eNatis and AARTO things a while back.

The times stated in the article also compares with the UAE where it was also about 2-3 days.

I have to renew my license in SA this year, hopefully all the other things will be sorted out when I am back home.

If I do this on someone's behalf, can the disc be delivered to me or must it be delivered to the owner of the vehicle?

I done my own one but was able to set the delivery address as my place of work, so you can have it delivered wherever you need it.

I am not the owner of the vehicle. I will be doing this on someone's behalf but don't want a situation where they won't give the disc to me due to me not being the owner.

Last month i received 3 separate emails notification that my discs are expiring then i thought let me try out the online system as its my 1st time. I initially wanted to use Capitec APP system but it would have costed R99 more.

I submitted the transaction online on Monday 2/12/24 on https://online.natis.gov.za/#/ to renew and my discs got delivered just now.

Same here. I'm still waiting since last week Wednesday's application. I've used this platform many times previously and each time was just a 3 day waiting period.

Somewhat related post...

My driver licence expired took me literally 1 minute to make a booking on eNatis for a new one, very quick

2 weeks, still waiting. Also before it was like 3 to 5 days.

Looks like the delays are at the Skynet collection branch. Still no delivery.

I waited a full month for my one car this year, renewed on the 11th September and the disc was delivered on the 10th October.

Why would you need to go to the optometrist for your car license?

Not for your car license, for your drivers license. I did both on the same day on my phone in case you thought it was for the other.

And if you are asking why the eye test in general for your driving license, it is basically the only reason we have an expiry on our cards right now. You kind of need to see to be able to drive.

And in context to the article they only stated that you can book your appointment for your driving license and track the delivery.

I braved it, going old-school and I visited the actual licensing department last week. I walked in at the licensing department offices at 13:17 and walked out with the license in my hands at 13:24. No additional courier costs etc., just the license fee (R450) and the compulsory R72 transaction fee.

I went to my Municipal Office. In an out in under 15 mins and cost it no extra
People just want to sit at home these days
