Why would you take a car that is out of warranty and doesn't even really have any presence in SA to a 'dealer'?
Also the service price wasn't to bad the repair costs were pricey but sadly not out of the realm of what things cost now

No shock.

I'll say it again, "Chevrolet" & "South Africa" have not been a proper thing since these days:

Article is inaccurate - the service and repairs/replacements of clutch are different activities and different bills.

Also, you should know that a Chevy Spark doesn't have a clutch that is designed to handle the additional torque those vinyls will bring.

if you think 3K for all this work is expensive I have some real bad news for you about cars…

Try VW… the labour alone is R1000 per hour on even a Citi golf…

Subaru like most brands the Front wiper blades set is R1200 that makes the R62 for wipers seem like a bargain…

breakdown of the parts installed and their prices is below:

  • Oil filter – R68.86
  • Gasket drain – R19.17
  • Element A/CL – R220.11
  • Spark Plug x4 – R263.48
  • Brake fluid – R88.33
  • Front Wiper blade – R62.70
  • Rear Wiper blade – R49.39
  • Oil x3.5 – R217
  • Filter pass – R454.38

Probably changes wiper blades front and rear every service because it’s for safety reasons.

I bet Michael (the writer) had to read the comments he would be appalled at some of the replies here.

I hope his suit is still in tact though.

The service cost is about standard for a dealership.

The bigger question is why is the clutch dead at 90,000km?
A colleague once had a Yaris 1.0l, clutch was replaced multiple times before he sold it, and the car was nowhere close to 200k kms when he sold it.

Toyota told him he can't drive and he is damaging the clutch, funny thing is that he also had a Tazz that was trouble free and carried him through all the times the Yaris was in for repairs, no clutch failure on it.

They truly don't build them like the used to.

I can believe that.

Took my beat-up armoured Renault 2012 for a 90k km service a few months ago - R7448 at the dealership for cambelt/belts/fluids/oil.

They wanted Another ~12k for the clutch and brakes - I told them "Guys, you are clutching at straws now. Do it for R6k and you have a deal". Strangely enough, they agreed... business is bad for dealerships now with the new laws about servicing vehicles it seems.

Not actually bad at all for a cambelt job.

Going to bet they didn’t do the water pump though so they can charge you all over again when it fails.

Brakes are always an outrageous rip off at dealers. Usually easily done for half the price with the same parts elsewhere.

R6k for clutch with parts and labour at a dealer? Impossible.
