That's the problem i'm having arf9999. No offence taken at all.

I realise that realistically i need to better myself if i want to earn this. I'm just not sure how to go about this. I have had about 4 years experience in the magazine industry and there are a lot of people doing the same job i do that earn a lot more.

As far as marketing goes i have no proper experience in this as i've only really dabbled in it. Will this be any good? I don't feel so.

You sound like me.

I have my BTech in electrical eng. & currently working as a consultant & I'm not earning anywhere NEAR what you're aiming at.

On a more serious note. The best way to make serious money is to start your own business. There must be something you can start doing on the side.

BrendanD, I'd have to disagree, while starting your own business means you pay yourself x. It also means harder work in the long run with a greater risk of losing everything.

So if you don't mind never taking a holiday again for another 15 years and working yourself to the bone to get what you want, then sure. Also the added stress on clients who don't pay on time and bills coming in ON time is a pain in the ass.

Currently a client owes me around R22k for work done which they haven't paid. It's easter weekend this week and very short weeks afterwards. They've been ignoring me for the last 2 weeks. So no. Not fun at all when your income is dependant on other people paying you for services rendered and not paying.

Having said that. OP is young. Only 25. You're 4 years into a job that you admitted your peers get paid more to do than you. Having an unrealistic salary expectation at this moment won't help at all.

You have 4 years experience in what you do now. What the hell is stopping you looking for a better paying job?

It took me almost 10 years just to get between R20-30k mark where you want to be right now, and that's with hard work, an awesome boss/company and at the end of the day I'm working for myself now. Built up trustworthy client liasons (well, MOST) and yea. Went from there...

4 years you should be earning 15k a month now. If not, look for something else. Don't be bothered too much with qualifications. Qualifications means ****all compared to real world experience. Just remember to practice interviewing. Your CV should be short and sweet. Nobody needs to know your marital status or that you have a drivers license for example. CV's are usually just there to entice the company to look at you and offer an interview, a foot in the door so to speak. Once you're in there SELL SELL SELL. You want to be in marketing, so market yourself.

I also lead off with "I am lazy" when someone interviews me and asks to describe myself and then "... because I'd rather do the work right once, instead of having to go back re-do it several weeks later"

It all comes with time and I think if you're not renumerated sufficiently that it's time to try and move to another company that will pay you your worth.
