I see that the recommended kit costs over R2000, but thats a bit too steep for me. I would like to know what the CHEAPEST possible setup would be for me to invest in that would still allow me to do filesharing. I can always upgrade later but I want to join now.

Depends how far you stay from the nearest highsite ? If you stay less than 15km I suppose this could be an answer

I liked the look of the bullet5 - you just screw it onto the bottom of whatever antenna you want... http://www.ubnt.com/products/bullet.php

but as protzkrog said:
1. Ubiquity does not support mikrotik protocols like nstreme. Using the bullet you will still need an antenna like a grid or a panel to make it work. Best would be to get a panel antenna integrated in a enclosure with a mikrotik routerboard inside. A CPE from miro of scoop.

BLIXEMPIE:

If you don't buy a RB433 you can't upgrade later, you need to buy a new routerboard, it's better to save and get the right stuff from the start. It's the recommended kit because it works best, not because we just dreamed it up. If RB411 with panel antennatjies worked best we would have recommended that. Also remember that with a RB433 you can add more antennas to mesh to other users or provide coverage to them, PTAWUG is a community network, you not only think of yourself, but those around you and the wug as a whole as well.
Many many okes thought they could get away cheaply and buy a cheap CPE, and later on bought proper kit, improving their speed and signal greatly.

Moenie sê ons het jou nie gewaarsku nie :p

15km with a nonostation, 13dbi panel, lol, maybe there would be signal, but it will be crap (in the city), maybe in the karoo where there is no interference it will work for 15km.

+1

I'm connected to CTWUG using a nanostation. It is not nearly as good as a Mikrotik kit but will get you connected.

Also I see kilos mentioned 15km imho if you are more then 4km away you should look at other options. a bullet with a high gain antenna like a 27dbi 5.8 grid might then work better for you.

Sorry forgot about the Bullet 5, great choice with the 27 dB grid, but here in George our S/N is great than 20dB on 2.4 Ghz
