Am I really this dumb, in which case Weskoppies is my next stop. I have been in IT for many years but for my life I cannot get ICS and iBurst to work via the network with two PCs running XP (Xtra Problems) SP2. I have tried a single crossover cable between the two PCs. No luck. A 8-port switch running normal cabling. No luck. Have added the second NIC. No luck. Tried USB on its own; USB and Ethernet together; Ethernet alone. Nothing. Followed all suggestions on the forum here. Tried the tricks on www.annoyances.org. No luck.

It's no joke anymore and it is affecting my business and straining the relationship with my roommate of 15 years, who uses the other PC. Worse still, everything worked PERFECTLY on Win2000!

If anyone knows how to fix this major irritation for me, contact me on andrieso@iafrica.com and name your price.

Try elimanate all possibilities.

First make sure that the two XP machines can "speak" to each other.

1) Set both machines to use exactly the same WORKGROUP.
2) Check the firewall settings on each machine. You need the right ports open for file+print sharing to work. For testing purposes you can always disable the firewall to see if that is the cause of the problem. If it suddenly works now the right ports are not open. Figure out which ports to enable and switch the firewall back on again.
3) Make sure each machine has the right IP address information.
4) Try pinging the other machine using hostname.
5) .. More later
