Hi all, I'm totally new here by the way.

I'm getting my I-burst (not gonna call everything fukt up names like u guys do) installed on Monday and have already had my signal test done, It showed that I definately need an antenna as I am 6.5 km away from the base station and only get 30%-50% signal without one. With the antenna I get 60%-70%, but should be better once installed as this was with it pressed up against the window and it will be mounted outside when installed. However, I only got around 300kb/s in the Telkom speed test that the techie ran on his laptop, is this normal with the service? Will it get better once installed with correct MTU's etc. ( actually i'm assuming his laptop is correctly configured) and is that OK speeds for 6.5 km from a station? I see ur 10 km frm ur station Alchamy, what kinda arial do you have and do you get 5 little lights lighting up as I only got 4 sometimes 5 but not too often, was only connected for a few minutes to do the test so I have no real indication as of yet.

Doubt my konneksie is gonna be any faster than 1 MBps TelkomDSL!

Thanks for any help, this forum rocks (I'm in Bergvliet in Kaapstad connecting to Plumbstead tower by the way)

Dude always make sure you always have 5 leds. ESP if u already using arial. Do not be fooled by sales talk make sure you get at least 600Kbit/s you should actually get 1000Kbits or more ... complaining later does NOT help. If you are unhappy do not buy until you are 100% happy.

Use uotrace of www.iburst.co.za click test connection u should get excellent as result then run poll make sure the two counters are running smoothly and at same speed.

Use Iconnect to check signal strenght anything under -90 say -91 is crap you don't want to ever see this. -74 is good.

urm guys don't take the light to seriously... firstly what you need to do is first install the USB driver and USE that USB cable to determine where the best position is for your modem... yeah sure 5 lights should mean 100% signal but not so...

It's all dependent on the number of packets lost (i.e Frame Error Rate) and if you are hitting anything above 15% then find yourself a decent position for the modem to rest in... or obtain an Antenna.

I'm currently in Hyde Park area which is suppose to be using EIther Rosebank or Sandton's towers, I get 5 signal lights but sometimes dependent on where my modem is situated my speeds are atrocious... until I position my modem to find that sweet spot...

100% on lights = a range of something like -90db down -60db each 3db is double strength therefore lights=BULL

Id rather stick to trusty adsl than crappy iburst wireless anyday. You might say that iburst works better than adsl 80% of the time, but the other 20% is what counts. Iburst have really stuffed up their reputation with all their crap in the past and imho that is what counts.

Well decotey you think telkom hasn't? Lest Iburst is trying to fix some of the stuff up whereas telkom has been stuffing the users around for yonks and not willing to redeem themselves :(

Even now they still telling you to PAY OF STFU

Happy Prices! (like Happy Easter)
We are giving out huge price increases to all we hold dear. Whats even better than that is we will wrap them up and hide them so that you will have to look for em.

Where will they be? Could be in your phone bill or in your monthly rental. Hey we might even slap them somewhere else Like a newly stashed bandwidth account.

Best of all they don't even taste like chocolate and you not ganna put on weight coz you won't be able to afford food anymore anyways

Happy Prices! Happy Prices to all!

I got 0% loss on both and the average time for adsl was 40ms with a peak of 58ms and the fastest ping was 38ms, with iburst the average was 59ms with a peak of 100ms and the fastest being 55ms.

What site did you ping? Also, which network did you connect via? (saix, uunet, is)

Cheers

Hey guys

Got my I-burst installed today! Much better speeds than when he did the test: 80-90% signal, over 800kb on Telkom speed tests, and just over 100ms ping to Iburst.co.za, around 60ms to MyADSL.co.za!

However the connection seems slow to do the initial connect with sites, almost worse than dial-up? MTU at 1352, no other settings chnaged, going through router wirelessly.
Sorry to ask the same old question but any help on this issue?

Howdy, I'm in my third month now and what you describe is exactly my situation ...

Speed - similar
Preceptions - I also get the inital page download pause ... irretating but you get used to it
Usage - access via WiFi router

Been tinkering for 3 months and still exactly where I started ... so what you describe is as good as it get for me. Maybe some of the other gurus can give you better optimisation tips.

Remember gents Saix and UUNET have been having serious peering link problems since the 8th of September. So if you do a ping test now, it's going to suck.

Here's an interesting stat. We monitor client internet connections at work.
Our ADSL clients have about 83% uptime, Our iBurst clients have about 96% uptime.
Nuff said there. This is over the month of August.

I think I have to mirror what have stated. The iBurst service itself is pretty good. It is the fear of what WBS will do that is the problem.

My iBurst experience has been one of 95%+ satisfaction.

Myself also the same except I can state I have 99% satisfaction :) w.r.t. the service itself. Been on iburst for a month now and only had problems one Saturday afternoon for about an hour - coul'dnt connect. The delay in waiting for a page to be accessed is more than made up for by the speed in which it downloads once 'connected'. I have never had a disconnect apart from that one Saturday afternoon (granted I use the UTC and only connect when I am at home and want to go online)
I am still waiting for ADSL but am seriously considering cancelling and getting a larger iBurst package (using iGo and buying additional access if I need to - last month was only half the month and this month will be going on leave so have not really gone a full month to see what my usage is)

iBurst Total + Hidden Costs!!!?

Won't you guys post what the installation and also what your monthly costs on iBurst are? ~~9GB or for as much b/w as possible!

Are they also like Telkom where you pay a lot more than they advertise?

No the prices are actually exactly what they state on the website, its pretty nice compared to Telkom with their lying ads. Just look on the site i'm too lazy www.iburst.co.za it's at the bottom. But the 2800 for the UTD is the snag, pretty high installation is cheap R250 to install an antenna from a reseller and R600 for the antenna so if you need one youve gotta factor that in.
