Anyone who has half a brain knows that UUNET quality of service is terrible (theres a reason why MWEB left them). Every ADSL/Iburst connection that relies on UUNET for bandwidth that I have used has been terrible.

Look at the adsl forums... notice the complaints? I beg you WBS, LEAVE UUNET. For once think about your users.

I stand to be corrected... but is anyone on UUNET currently having a good experience?

I suspect that WBS have a contract with UUNET that has to run for a certain time, and even if UUNET are to blame for all the International Bandwidth problems [BTW I'm not 100% convinced of that] WBS are unlikely to be able to just switch to another provider...since Telkomonopoly controls SAT3 & SAFE in SA it is likely that Telkomonopoly factor into this no international bandwidth problem...

regardtv, is there a news article about staff leaving UUNET SA? - what are the reasons behind it?

I know quite a few ex-staffers there ic ... if you have a look around their offices you'll notice the silence ;-(

While I have my opinion on what's going on there I will not comment as it is a rather delicate issue....suffice to say that I think uunet-sa is following the path of most of uunet-europe's staffing approach.

Ahhh, an inside track, well that's even better than a news article, and since I do trust you I believe what you say :).

i think you are a prick. is it not possible that the reason why I-burst is so **** is due to the fact they could be over subscribed and are too cheap to buy more bandwidth from UUNET. I am a UUNET customer and the network flys!! Why don't you geeks getting a friggen life.

you just have nothing of value you to say, your ranting is purely based on speculation. Do you know how much bandwidth I-Burst buy from UUNET?

No you don't! Do you know how I-burst oversell their service, No you don't!

Fact, UUNET service 100's of customers that are happy with their Network, in fact, if you had your facts right, you would know that UUNET have the best network of all the ZA ISP's. If you want a better service from I-Burst then tell them to buy more bandwidth from UUNET.

Remember, in life, you get what you pay for!

ok, dude flame me dude, i was TOLD by WBS that it was a UUNET issue mmmmkay? I have also notice many many complaints about UUNET in the adsl forums.

Also... MWEB did just leave UUNET for IS...

So thats what I am going on. What basis is yours? I just wanna know the truth. If you can prove to me otherwise, I will be sure to change my opinion.

of course I-Burst are going to say it's a UUNET issue. do you really think they would say "Well we are actually too cheap to buy more bandwidth and our network is highly oversold so we can make a quick buck?"

i-burst, as with all 2nd tiers need to play a bigger role in educating it's users. Dude, broadband is a highly volitile service, there are no guarantees. Live with it. Bandwidth will always be an issue in ZA, as we have so little of it.

i have been a uunet customers for 4 years and their network rocks. Granted ADSL has proved to be a problem, but that is not the only indicator of the 'network health'.

who cares if MWEB left UUNET, customers leave different ISP's all the time, it's called competition. We were once an IS customer and we came across to UUNET.

65% of ZA's largest portals are hosted on the UUNET backbone, if the network didn't fly do you really think they would stay with UUNET. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself before you throw commets like this around "LEAVE UUNET they are the devil!"

Have a good evening.

 Ok, ignoring the ambiguous statement that someone here is a pr1ck - even if it is myself - I don't care, but I do want to know if you think R700/month for 3GB is paying too little - should I be paying WBS more than that to expect a reliable service?

the answer to your question is YES. you should be paying more. fact is, ZA is so far off the Superhighway, that we will always pay a lot of money for bandwidth. take a look at http://www.telegeography.com/products/map_internet/index.php. Our continent just doesn not have the cotent to deliver to the rest of the world, that is why bandwidth is so expensive. They only way ISP's (First Tiers) connect to the rest of the world is via SAT-2/3, SAFE or Satellite....and it's expensive. Do you really think that for R700 you can expect a great service, if you think so, you are kidding yourself, and all you will do, is rant and rave and rant and rave like all the other fruitcakes on this site. Take a look at the link, graphically it shows you how much bandwidth ZA has in comparison to the rest of the world. IF you want faster speeds and you dont want to pay for it, then MOVE...go and live in the US or Europe.

sector, riiight - you are entitled to your opinion then, naturally I disagree, and I am not going to try and win you over to the side of the consumer who believes we are paying too much & getting too little for it. There I leave it & we can agree to disagree :).

It's amazing how the excuses that Telkom make are taken up as fact by paying customers ...

Yea Right

Still the consensus among many IT proffesionals, with who I meet on a daily basis, is that jojonet is no good. Applaudeble try sector - play around with voip on a jojonet connection and tell me your findings.

I agree with your comment that there is a lot of sulking around here. a Lot of people use these forums for venting frustrations rather than sticking to logical discussion. Unfortunatelly we live in a country where tommorrow's technology is being rolled out while the person that has to support it barely knows how to wipe is arse.

But

if South Africa does not have that many internet subscribers, why get more international bandwidth ? If I am correct then, the breathtaking internet map you have posted proves and says little.

PS : That map would make a nice wallpaper

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does that map not refer to the SAT2 cable?, wasn't SAT3 only started in 2002, and the map is dated 2002 before SAT3 was actually anywhere near completion...?

//yes I don't feel like researching the facts right now - it's late...
