Is anyone here running a linux machine that maintains their iburst connection and acts as a gateway for other machines on the network?

If so:
1. Do you experience constant disconnections?
2. How is your internet sharing setup?
3. Do you manually set your mtu?

This is in light of the following: http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=282177#post282177

Yeah everything was working perfectly and than the 28th or 29th of july came. I have spoke to the techs at iBurst and they have been this -> <- helpful. Its getting really frustrating. :(

I run in excess of 15 units under linux with rp-pppoe.

All use fixed MTU and use shorewall iptables firewall with nat+squid+postfix....

I have on occasion had the disconnection errors as well... My connection drop errors are however due to my utd hunting to out-of-range towers repeatedly...

If you've had a "sudden" change to a problem state I'd guess it has to do with antenna positioning on their side etc etc... basically not much you can do about it at all.

Are you using an external antenna ?

Not running an external antenna. I think the next thing to do is to check the hardware on the server more so the network card. Than if that seems all good than I will chat to the techs again and get them to come and test the signal.

Thanks for the response regardtv

I have been running a UTD on my Mandrake 10.0 box for a while.
I use Shorewall as firewall, to nat, and act as gateway. I use the pppoe stuff in Mandrake, but roaring penguin works just as well.
I get times where I keep the same IP for 5 or 6 days. Other days it changes ever hour... depends on alot of factors.

I used Win USB, then Win pppoe, followed by FC2 for about a month as a shared connection before setting up IPCop, think FC uses rp-pppoe. In all cases I set the MTU manually, although I've used a variety of values.

At times I stay connected for up to 5 days, then suddenly I get disconnected every couple of minutes. Tried helpdesk once, just to hear that I must restart pc. I obviously checked everything before phoning them and the WBS rocket scientist had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned IPCop...

IpCop & lotsa disconnection on my side, but I have checked several times using a winxp laptop 2 see if I could connect while disconnected (unsuccessfull) and have thus eliminated Ipcop as a cause of disconnections. Getting an external arial always helps with any problem besides the good old I am in da middle of nowhere and is getting nill bar reading on boxie

PM Gres He seems to have a much better cheaper arial than wbs although I cannot vouce for it as I bought wbs's one before I knew about his one.

BTW i don't set the mtu as it changes it automatically anyway those mtu settings in my sig work great in winXP

I am running gentoo but rp-pppoe is standard for all linux distros. All I did was emerge rp-pppoe (compile it) and than run the adsl-setup script. I have my modem connected on eth1 and my hub connected on eth0. What I will do is put the ubuntu live-cd in and boot from it and set it up.
