....Langa bemoaned the slow pace of liberalisation in SA’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector, but Mashile does not quite share this view.

The process of liberalisation, he believes, should be guided by factual considerations in this country — and SA poses a dilemma because it has both a third- and first-world economy....

Nothing he said in the entire interview even once mentioned the consumer, whom he is supposed to protect.
Can this oke even get his head through the door opening into his office, I mean, scientist, mentor, steward, blah blah, dude you got the job already, give it a rest. (maybe add 'Ivy's little biatch boy to your CV)

The problem with benchmarking SA to the European or US experience, says Mashile, is that one size does not fit all.
“If we move ourselves to one particular model, we will continue to play catch-up as that model evolves. We will be dictated to by the conditions on the ground of this country. There are certain similarities, but there is still some uniqueness about SA,” he says.

Ahh yes, the Telkom national anthem, Compare SA to others when it suites Telkom.

Nope, no warm fuzzy feeling here.

Yeah, Mashile is definitely gonna be the end of what little credibility ICASA had...

He's a government-appointed puppet through and through...no wonder all the "good guys" at ICASA are bailing...
All very very sad...

Everyone join me in waving the rest of the world bye bye as they motor off into the distance...

Doesn't the subject line remind anyone else of a MUD?

-Icasa’s new chief deflects criticism. No damage incurred.
-Icasa’s new chief casts slow progress spell.
-Economy loses 155 points.
-Warning: Economy is very weak!

LOL.
That was my exact same thoughts when I read the top post.
"poses a dilemma because it has both a third- and first-world economy...."

It was if Sizwe said it himself.

What is his point?

The 2.5 million people that were cut off are history now. ICASA did nothing!!!!!!!!

The remaining people that have a phone in SA can barely afford one. ICASA stands back and regurgitates paper work.

Telkom is making Zillions, but not putting back into infrastructure and ICASA cannot keep Telkom in check with the current legislation and IMO I don’t think they are wanting to change the status quo and possibly have been told by upper echelons in government to mind their p's and q's.

Give some credit - he does acknowledge that prices are still way too high
“But we are still not happy that the prices are not coming down.”

Neither Telkom nor the three cellphone operators have dropped prices in real terms.
Its a place to start.
