ADSL hearings

hello Rudolph - if possible add some issues

current adsl access lines work perfectly - then some people (tech's) of telkom go and fiddle with the dps boxes - clients then go in a frenzy when adsl's goes down!!

2 Gb access should be in region of R99 per month - it will make it more acceptable for SBE's and home users

telkom is cuurently coining it - for that matter all the years!! - all local access shouldl be derugualated - as what was happening in the greater London UK areas.

thanks for the support of the myadsl community - Nicol

I have the 1024 offering from telkom and find that the speed varies heavily depending on the time of day, the price is also an unacceptably expensive and i am only able to download 3gb a month due to telkoms wholesale bandwidth prices.

I play World Of Warcraft (an online game) and the latency is a huge issue for me, sometimes it gets soo bad that i am unable to play.
When i am able to play the ping is so high that i cant even play agains other people (PVP) as i cant cast spells/abilitys fast enough

Yeah, latency (locally & internationally) is quite pathetic with Telkom ADSL.

may i ask who your isp is? cause honestly that doesnt sound like a line problem, more a isp not being able to provide all its customers with enough b/width. i can honestly say i can get 1024k speed at any time of day or night, any day of the month.

Why doesn't myadsl, have an online graphic analysis of the broadband suppliers performance, surely this would be the best thing that myadsl could do for the industry, competition creates better services.

It would also let broadband users know if a problem was network related, which would save on the “why is my performance so bad questions”

I suggest a script that sends test data, every 5 minutes using the different networks, and then reports the times.

If users to the site could see the difference in performance, at any time, of the different players involved, this would prompt them to improve.

PLEASE ASK OF THOSE PRESENT AT THE ICASA MEETING, HOW MANY HAVE A TECHNICAL QUALIFICATION IN THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY ??

Usual problem, unqualified "suits", making technical decisions !!!!

When nobody thought the internet was much use for anything other than email, these sort of meetings would be frequented by “geeks”, NOW that there’s big money involved there frequented by “yuppy scum”…lol

Adsl

well guys, let me see,
as I'm from europe, I'm used to speeds up to 20 megabit per second. With no cap and no shape. The whole story grabed around 50 euro out of my pocket. 50 euro x 8.30 = R 413 . I could even watch my favorite sport via the internet. In the netherlands I received a little box that looked like the DSTv decoder, I plugged it into the adsl line and into the back of my tv and there were my 10 sport channels. I think that telkom should be ashamed of themselves. Ripping people off. Lots of little businesse go bankrupt because they don't make enough money to pay for the 192k adsl from telkom. telkom should come up with a better idea to provide Internet to their costumers. My old neighbor from the netherlands is busy right now to install a glassfibre internet connection through the whole industrial area of his city. 100Mbits fast and very cheap. I think telkom should consider installing those fibres to increase the internet speed and its a good investment. where else should our money go ? The salary of telkoms ceo is to high and should be decreased by at least 2 million bucks.

You have a number of myadsl users, who volunteer to run a script that sends a 500k file to a number of different locations, and also download a 500k(whatever suitable for your connection) file, from different locations, the script reports the time taken in a graph on the myadsl website, it does this every hour.

It would become, very obvious, which ISP/Carrier combination is the best!

It would eliminate having to listen to bs from support, as you might say;

"that’s rubbish I see MWEB/TELKOM was running fine so how can you say it is a Telkom problem"

After all don’t we ALL want to know which ISP/Carrier combination is the best ?

This would be a TRUE figure of performance for END USERS, as the scripts would be running on an END USERS machine.

This would also show up faults in the carriers networks, like poor quality cables/connections, lousy reception of the 3G networks, overloaded 3G networks, loss of service due to technical problems like lightning damage etc.

THE ISP’S love to show you their backbone speeds, this doesn’t show any of the above faults.

You could even show web browser / operating system / ISP / carrier combinations speeds,,,,if the script uses the web browser dll/com to download the files.

I will write the scripts, if you can't find someone all ready involved with the myadsl website.

pm me if you might be willing to run these scripts on your machine, we need a good combination of users from different locations in SA. The script would only run for the time taken <5 minutes every hour...and you will be able to set the amount of data it uploads downloads according to what you can spare, you can disable it at any time in which case it reports as an END USER termination, so as not to skew the data.

A good start would be about 5 users from 5 different networks from 5 different city/town in ZA (total 125 so dont be shy, do your bit to improve broadband in SA)

Please state Town / Browser / Operating System / Connection(Telkom/Vodacom/MTN/IBurst etc) / ISP (I Will not divulge to anyone other than myadsl admin), you dont have to leave a name or contact info

If myadsl wants to write the scripts, I will forward your interest to them.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I though like a child, I reasoned like a child. But now that I am a man, I put these childish ways behind me.

I am the crappiest speller around but I had to laugh.....lol

I also spell like a child

Sorry ;)

Hey, it adds to the "mood". Besides, this isn't a spelling contest. It's a "who's the crappiest ISP / telecoms provider" contest.

Very poor service (Telkom no MyAdsl)

I ordered Adsl 3 months ago.

Not a single call was made from Telkom to me.

At a great waste of time I contacted their call centre, shocking waits there, numerous times. 3 times I was advised that they had decided to do the installation on a specific day. I stayed home on 2 or those days, waiting in vain.

No apologies, no calls to say we're ready "when can we install", nada. And 3 broken arrangements.

I cancelled the order yesterday!!

I am now using iBurst for broadband, not that they are much better service wise, historically.

Thanks for this opportunity.

Lord Merlin when your right,,,,,,, your right !!

Anyone involved with the myadsl website, got comment ?

Lets get this off the ground, and say NO to crappy service, sneaky caps, and other general p$$$ me off'ers!

I think it prudent that we take this to a new thread, as this is " ICASA ADSL Hearings: Your Feedback Needed"

Started a new thread for this conversation

Sound familiar. We ordered ADSL last year, and was told it will be installed on so and so date. Come this day, nothing. So we phone telkom, fight with any-and-everybody, get's promised it will be installed on this-and-that day, again. Nothing. Then we're told, it will be installed 2 weeks later. After 3 weeks we phone them, only to find out it was installed 2 weeks ago already, without a notification???? Now, I ask you....

get rid of capping

been on adsl for about 2 years..prices have come down a little but its very expensive. We dont seem to be as fortunate as in certain countries where access is free...anyways,with todays multimedia on the net eg trailers/webcams/p2p /softwre updates etc using less than 3 gigs has become impossible.on a single day 1 can go over a gig, my question is why its capped and why so expensive .a Reasonable price price should be between 1 and 2c per 5 megs.Even line rental is high and needs improvement.reasonable price should be R100 to R150.With all the money earned by Telkom you would expect fast and efficient service.its time ICASA started getting tough on standards!

Please lets start providing cheap and affordable internet access to all south africans!!!

Speeds we could only dream of in this country thanks to Telkom.

what overheads??

i'd like the hearing to extract exactly why our favourite carrier imposes such high costs / content caps / shaping. what possible costs do telkom incur selling services within a largely established infrastructure?

</rhetoric>

telkom = monopoly exploiting a position of power for profit. fullstop. is it really so difficult to see the injustice here? i feel like i'm taking crazy pills. @_@
