Took long enough, but I still get the feeling that all we are getting is another MTN/Vodacom situation.

"Price-wars"? PAH!

<Q>Head of telecommunication at directorate for technology Dimitri Ypsilanti said: "From the OECD experience, the most efficient and rapid way to build-up the infrastructure is through full competition -- attempts at partial competition such as through having a duopoly have been shown not to work."</Q>

And yet they will not learn from lessons the entire world has already learnt.

Yes. Unfortunately it has taken SA this long to realise that monopolies (like dictators) are BAD.

as speedily as possible

It really is a pity that they never give an exact date... Still, we can hope that speedily as possible means within the next month or so...

Darkling : Cellphone prices could have come down. When CellC came out, all their prices were less than Voda and MTN. However, noone signed up. Their prices are still lower even after Voda and MTN's recent reduction. But they only have a total of about 2 million customers. Noone rewarded them for lower prices. Vodacom and MTN saw this and didn't bother responding.

That being said, CellC has the most god-awfull customer service, and I would recommend Vodacom to anyone. Seems price isn't everything

5% lower isn't enough to entice someone especially when when you stand to lose something as important as your number.

These new reduction are also a joke. For prepaid and only on a 3 hour window during which time most sane people are commuting, they drop from their uber-high premium to the 'not so bad' existing after hours cost.

the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) believes that fixed-line duopolies, including those in the UK and Australia, do not necessarily bring about cheaper prices or a competitive environment.

So expect the same pricing structure, but hopefully with better service then. Just like the cellphone guys, no different. ICASA regulations will definately be necessary. I don't believe that we will have competition when they enter. Only agreed pricing structures between SNO and Telkom.
