DStv competitor ordered to shut its doors in South Africa

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has ordered Chinese pay-TV operator StarTimes to shut down its StarSat platform in the country.

Icasa explained that it issued a subscription broadcasting licence to StarSat's parent company, On Digital Media (ODM), on 9 July 2008.

StarSat is the South African branch of StarTimes Media, the largest satellite television provider in Africa. Since acquiring TopTV in 2013 StarSat has continued to provide South Africans with great entertainment at an excellent price.

Our mission is to offer South Africans comprehensive entertainment solutions that will satisfy a large range of tastes at prices they can afford. To that end, we have invested in creating a simple, easy-to-use and practical decoder void of unnecessary gimmicks so that we can offer you a fair price for access to satellite TV. Our brand new Sat3 decoder is a full HD compatible decoder with PVR recording capabilities wrapped up in a simple, attractive design. It’s remote and digital interfaces are simple and easy to understand and navigate. To make sure we can offer quality entertainment at a fair price we offer multiple channel packages for you to choose from.

Some peeps at ICASA are going to have to backtrack shortly... one doesn't piss off the Chinese masters without consequences.
Or, they'll just go through the motions and reapply for a license, and it'll be granted.

lmao

Don't think they much care about ICASA.
“On 18 March 2024, the Authority decided that ODM should wind up its affairs and cease providing broadcasting services by 18 September 2024, and further inform its subscribers,” said Icasa.

Me thinks all is not as is said. I doubt a company such as ODM will just let a license application slip. Most likely there was some sort of dispute which prevented ODM from reapplying within suitable requirements. They had been against ODM being a success from the start by not allowing them to broadcast the channels they do elsewhere. Rather ironic seeing it was the constitutional court that overturned previous nat laws and declared that South Africans have a constitutional right to porn.

I think when Disney pulled ESPN from Africa, these guys still offered American sports through Fox if my memory serves me correctly.

Honesty, new to me.

Bet you Multichoice recently concluded a nice big deal at Bentley that suddenly appeared to some ICASA employees family picnic..
