Analysts have predicted that breaking MultiChoice's dominance in the sector will be difficult because it has been operating for more than 10 years. In anticipation of competition, the company is revamping its content by signing new exclusive TV rights.

Sci-fi channel.. you can do it. Oh, get sky one as well!... and the new science channel

Dsd ?

Of course DSTV wont let them use the same DSD box.

DSTV - I OWN THE STB - Stick your over-the-air updates... Thank goodness for cutting Chip Select line.

SO be prepared for another STB to go with your Terestrial STB next year.

"While the Authority was very impressed by the Telkom Media bid it was nevertheless felt that the track record of the erstwhile monopoly as regards pricing and the shameless fleecing of consumers should not be further rewarded."

That has never stopped our government or ICASA before from keeping the monopoly going, nor will it this time. Telkom TV coming to a pc near you, soon.

Would be funny if they didnt renew Multichoice's license.
(Even though that would never happen.)

They deserve not have a license after years of being an absolute rip-off! :D

If this new license will make Mutichoice reduce their price, then I welcome the new player.

so they'll announce a handfull of licenses

The guys that didnt get picked, will run to the courts and delay the entire process

(remember the fiasco when they appointed the SNO a few years back?)

I don't have much hope in the new broadcaster having operations up and running by next year. There's also the matter of broadcasting in hi-def (720p minimum), and I can virtually guarantee you that none of the 3 front-runners have plans in place to broadcast in hi-def or release STBs that have the capability within the next 6 months. If they do, I will be extremely impressed!
