SpaceX's Starlink satellite Internet service has been a game-changer for many people and businesses in rural South Africa.

While the service is not officially supported locally and has been deemed illegal due to not having the required telecoms and spectrum licences, thousands of South Africans have been using its roaming service since early 2023.

Starlink is a great service however it is not the only LEO satellite service available in country. I just cannot understand how the government continues to push Starlink aside for political reasons when it is clear for all to see that our economy is in very bad shape, especially in rural areas where a good internet service with high speed and low latency can help many employers exploit markets more efficiently. e.g Mining is a great example where reliable, fast connectivity with latency under 100ms opens opportunities to aggregate costs through cloud computing.

The government must decide whether they want grow the economy or bleed the country dry through outdated ideology and greed.

Over 75 countries have approved Starlink on SpaceX terms - there is no excuse.
