About the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy

Australia and India are the two most successful sides in the ICC Champions Trophy since its inception in 1998 when it was known as the ICC KnockOut Trophy. Both the sides have won the event twice, with Australia being the only side to win back-to-back titles - in 2006 in Mumbai, India, and in 2009 in Centurion, South Africa. India shared the title with hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2002 before winning again in Birmingham, England, in 2014.

Other past winners are South Africa (Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1998), New Zealand (Nairobi, Kenya, 2000), West Indies (The Oval, London, 2004) and Pakistan (The Oval, London, 2017).

CSA STATEMENT ON ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY FIXTURE AGAINST AFGHANISTAN

Thursday, 09 January 2025

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) can confirm receiving correspondence from British Member of Parliament Lord Peter Hain urging South Africa to boycott its fixture against Afghanistan at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Tournament scheduled to be staged in Pakistan in February.

CSA finds the treatment and suppression of women’s rights in Afghanistan abhorrent and firmly believes that women’s cricket deserves equal recognition and resources, an area in which CSA’s record on women’s cricket in South Africa speaks for itself.

As the Champions Trophy is an ICC event, the position on Afghanistan must be guided by the world body in accordance with international tournament participation requirements and regulations.

CSA President Rihan Richards said, “We are of the view that a more unified and collective approach from all ICC members will be more impactful.

“CSA is committed and will continue to engage in constructive dialogue with the ICC and other members to find a solution that upholds Women’s cricket in Afghanistan and influence meaningful change in that country.”

PROTEAS MEN’S SQUAD ANNOUNCED FOR ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY 2025

Monday, 13 January 2025

JOHANNESBURG: Proteas Men’s white-ball head coach Rob Walter has today announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be played in Pakistan from 19 February – 09 March.

One-Day International captain Temba Bavuma will lead the full-strength squad, which includes 10 players who competed in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, where South Africa reached the semi-finals.

Batters Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, along with all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, have been selected for their first senior 50-over ICC tournament.

Anrich Nortje, who missed out on the World Cup due to injury, makes his return. The fast bowler has made a full recovery from a left toe injury and is joined by fellow seamer Lungi Ngidi, who has also returned to action following a groin injury.

South Africa has been drawn in Group B, with their opening fixture against Afghanistan on 21 February in Karachi. Bavuma’s side will then travel to Rawalpindi to take on Australia on 25 February, before returning to Karachi for their final group stage match against England on 01 March.

Cricket South Africa High-Performance Batting Lead Imraan Khan will join the support staff as batting coach.

Commenting on the squad, Walter said: “This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this.

“We’ve managed to maintain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, whilst adding fresh talent.
“Our recent performances at ICC events show that we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. We’re eager to take the next step and go even further in pursuit of the coveted silverware.

“We’re also looking forward to Imraan joining our support staff. He will be a great asset as we look to strengthen our batting and continue improving as a unit.”

The squad for the preceding tri-series against hosts Pakistan and New Zealand (08 – 14 February) will be announced in due course.

How the **** does Ngidi make this squad besides the obvious that he is only there to please the ANC? If I was Linde I would **** off or retire from international cricket and make a statement. I'm angry that wasters like Ngidi keep getting chances because he is black. There is no incentive for him or the likes of Phelukwayo to improve because they know they will be selected. That is why he has not improved an inch since he started playing international cricket, same as Phelukwayo. They haven't improved instead they have gotten worse since they started international cricket. The system breeds complacency with players like them. We need Kwena to getter better quick. Also where is Baartman? He is also being ****ed by the system because he is not black enough.

Ngidi is good when fit. (IPL picks on Merit and Ngidi is always there although he has not played a lot over the past few years). Phelukwayo hasn't really impressed and has had numerous chances, Baartman very unlucky.

You need to relax and go research your cricket better.

He is rubbish. Noone is going to convince me is any good or better than Baartman or would add more value than Linde.

I watch plenty of cricket to know who is good and Ngidi is not it.

Baartman is good.

Linde has the JP Duminy syndrome. fantastic at domestic level but can never convert in internationals. same as JJ Smuts.

and the tournament is in Pakistan.
That means Pace is an advantage. for the world cup you wanted pace off from fast bowlers, so Baartman was amazing.
in Pakistan you want Ngidi, his swing and pace on is the clostest thing we have to a second Rabada. and we all can agree we want a second KG.

Maphaka is still too inexperienced to put him in that slot for the tournament. not when Ngidi is fit. if Ngidi is fit, you play Ngidi. same with Jansen, Rabada and Nortjie.

that pace attack is likely the best pace attack in the world right now. india and Austrialia come close but I think that our 4 is the best.

our top order needs a bit of work though, and our middle order is also very strong. but looking at the stats for 2024, no opening batsmen did well, the quality of opeing bowlers is just too high right now. I think even G Smith and H Gibbs would look bad compared to the current crop of opening bowlers worldwide.

Looking at the squad likely Rob will start.

1.bavuma
2.tony
3.rassie
4.aiden
5. Klaassen
6.miller
7.mulder
8.jansen
9.keshav
10.kg
11.anrich

Would prefer Stubbs & Ryan but doudt that will happen.

Stubbs in for Tony and make Rassie open...

I think the squad should be selcted based on the pitch and conditions.
that squad leaves us with a lot of options.

Rassie has never opened the batting in an ODI (in my quick search at least)

I say Markram to open with Themba but I do agree De Zorzi is not really shining and should maybe not get the slot. brilliant in the field, but he has failed to take the shine off the new ball too often lately.

yeah so drop Tony, promote Markram to open and put Rassie at 3 Stubbs at 4.

This is exactly what I would do. Stubs also adds another spin option although in a very part timer capacity.

technically RvvD does also bowl....

the only all rounder we have is Jansen, and he is seen as more of pollock than a Kallis

Stubbs in for Tony and make Rassie open...
He is averaging 18 in the last 12 months. I rather go with rickelton.

If it was my team and not what rob will pick it would be ryan ahead of tony and stubbs ahead of rassie.
