I looked in my Bios and the temperature of the cpu is 45C - is that good/bad for an average p4 ?

its not bad... I am not to clued up with pentiums but i know my P4 at work when i ran the tmpreture thing in windows mode was hitting 50-55C which i presume is okay...

My AMD at home hits 45 when it is working hard and idles at about 30C... but i have a decent cooling set up here where at work i use stock features.

For Pentium it is good. On my old P4 2.8 it reached 68 while running 3DMark. Idling was just around 50.

Same here.
Actually even in the middle of summer my CPU idles cool between 30 and 33 and in winter between 27 and 30.
I am using a 3200+ Venice AMD 939 chip and it is overclocked to a 4100+.
Some of the later P4's run very hot.
Ever since the P4 Northwood chips, things started to get hotter on the Intel Chips, like the Prescotts.

My P4 3gig i had to drop the voltage slightly as 60degrees is silly. so she idles around 37Degrees, and under strain around 45 - 50degrees. During summer, it tends to go up a little - quite understandable. Got 2 Case Fans going, one on the Side for the Hard Drives, and one at the back. Will be installing another 3 soon - guess i will have to start brushing the dust out more regularly: )

Think it's quite normal for a P4. My A64 3000+ is running at 39°C with a 12.5% overclock atm. If it hits 70°C you have a problem. This is normally the alarm temperature for a lot of programs.

my p4 3.0ghz used to run at about 60deg. i replaced the standard intel cpu fan with a thermaltake blue orb II; now normal temp is 45-50 deg.
