tricky question... need some advice from you smart buggers

If one lived in a African country, or Europe/America (but outside of South Africa)... If the international market had to find a TV listed on Makro and were keen to pay for the freight services to get it to their country... would they be subject to TV license fees? Or does it get void?

Scenario A: They are not even in SA, and just buy online... Do TV licenses get void... or would they have to pay ?

Scenario B: They visit SA, walk into a South African store, buy a TV and want to take it with them (freight) to their home country (no usage in SA). Do TV licenses get void... or would they have to pay?

`I dont think any SA shops systems/processes are equipped to handle these requests. Either-way you will need a TV licence.

Sidenote: on Scenario B you will be liable to pay taxes and customs in the destination country if they find out its a new item.

We don't have legal systems that allow retailers to sell TV locally without a TV License..and since nobody is retarded enough to buy a TV and pay the exorbitant shipping charges no online shops think a foreigner would buy one and ship it overseas.

So they will ALL require a TV License.

But let's say, there are people that come from africa. Pay cash. They obviously ask "but why must i pay a south african tv license, when I don't use it here locally." whilst maintaining he has paperwork from the freight service (local freight service) that it will go straight to the container to be taken home to him.

Point is, there are certain models of TV's that countries in Africa cannot source there. Hence they want to bring it home with them.

Will a TV license still be charged for or not?

The store won't care... they are legally mandated to get a TV License number before selling a TV and therefore that will require one.

It's strange though hey. People that wont even be using the South African broadcasting services, get charged for it.

Reason I asked/started this thread, I have a friend who lives in Kenya. looking for a specific Samsung TV model which he can't source in Kenya locally (he runs a couple boutique hotels). He used to work with me at IBM back in the day. I got him pricing that beats all local stores (makro/game/dionwired), but he questions the tv license portion (rightfully so).

In any case, thank you all for the answers/sharing your knowledge. much appreciated

Well I bought a TV from TakeAlot not 5 months ago, they delivered it to my office, receptionist signed the slip, that's it. No licence required.

And that's in Cape Town, not even abroad.

In a physical store I just produced my Zim passport and they didn't require a license, this was a few years ago though. Trying to do this online will just result in lost hair.

But if the TV's are so much cheaper just pay the R250 or whatever it is.
