If CellC offered 386 or 512kbs uncapped... how much would you pay?

As per title, keeping in mind:
- it's dependent on at least having a good signal.
- it may be a little slower during peak times (ie: not a guaranteed speed 24/7)
- you would get 512kb/s or close to it during non-peak times, for example between 21:00 - 05:00 (9PM-5AM)

Well, I'd pay around 300 p/m for that. Perhaps a bit more, but not a lot, as it has to be cheaper than going the Telkom route. And no contract. Maybe I'm being unrealistic.

R400 - R500 per month.
12 month contract would be great, 24 month I would have to think about, but would probably still do it.

I just wanna see how many people think this is a good idea - might get CellC's attention?

Keeper for R400-R500 least I would want is 1mb/s.
Or a 5GB cap then throttled to 512-1024.

I think Cell C should be the first Network to offer DECENT uncapped. It would really WOW the market.

I think this is a good Idea. Cell C Should have 2 uncapped plans:

1. up to 1mbps - R699 per month
2. up to 2mbps - R1199 per month

Of course, there must be a fair usage policy with the plans. eg: shaping during office hours (max 768kbps on 1mbps maximum of 1.8mbps on 2mbps from 7am - 7pm) and shaping of torrents.

This would make cell c a much stronger player in the mobile network industry.

I think it would be a great package, depending on price ofc. The mobile companies should capitalize on things like cable theft etc, win over those customers with similar deals (like keeper's).

I would say the price should be R699. With this there can be Fair usage policy (ie: shaping during working hours (maybe maximum speed of 768kbps during 7am - 7pm) and full speed on weekends, and the other hours. Of course, Cell C can throttle torrents (maximum of 600kbps with torrents).

If Cell C launches this uncapped, it would be big and it would scare MTN.

For a tad more than your willing to pay, I can get 4mb/s uncapped from mweb (adsl line rental included)..

The point is we need to get the ball rolling on CellC/8ta/etc offering uncapped to compete against MTN.

384kBps - R199. 30 gig max download p/m.
512kBps - R299. 50 gig max dl p/m.
1024kBps - R399. 100 gig max dl p/m.

On Telkom do uncapped you can d/l a max of 250gigs of torrents on their 1Mb line, and it goes for about R650/pm inc line rental.
So something that falls within or even less than the ADSL range would be ideal.

Maybe 8ta can provide 512kb/s for around R300-R400? I'd buy that!

Firstly, you couldn't GIVE me a connection throttled to 512kb/s capped or uncapped. It would be like watching paint dry. :)

The maximum data you would be able to transfer in a month at 512kb/s is between 4 and 5 Gb and that would mean you would virtually have to be connected 24/7 with no hiccups at all. CellC offers the equivalent of that deal at the moment. For the equivalent of R375/month you get 5Gb/month. The catch is one has to pay R4499 for the year up front. For R599 you can get 3Gb valid for a year with the modem thrown in effectively giving you a modem for R224. I paid significantly less than that when the 60Gb/year deal was on promo but I will be more than happy to pay R4499 for 60Gb spread over a year when my present deal runs out.

If you want to pay monthly you can get 3Gb/month for R400 and that will bring you fairly close to 512kb/s uncapped.

Speaking for myself, if I was prepared to have my connection throttled to 512kb/s I would expect to achieve that speed 24/7 for both upload and download. Speed does, of course, depend on many factors but where I live I get over 7Mb/s download and 2Mb/s upload during off-peak times. Today's a public holiday and I have just measured 7.46Mbps up and 2.05Mbps down at 12:30. On a normal weekday I would expect a minimum of about between 2 - 3 Mbps down and about 1Mbps up at this time of day. Most often it is quite a bit higher than that.

@MervynB - I think you should revisit your Grade 2 maths. lolz
Between 4 and 5 Gb per month? More like PER DAY

512kb/s = 64KB/s = 3.8MB/Min = 228MB/Hour = 5.4GB/Day (164GB/Month)

If the product was set (with 95% uptime or whatever) at 384kbs - rather than throttled to with a possible rate of only 2kbs - and it was a prepaid option R300 would be a good price per month.

Oops.

I'll have you know I DID pass Grade 2 with Summs. :) (I wasn't so good with spelling though.) The trouble is that back when I went to school they only started teaching proper "times" sums in Grade 3 and that I failed. :)

Back in the day when I started playing with modems (300 baud V.21 would you believe) a byte was 10 bits as each byte had a start and a stop bit. Modern technology probably does away with these as they squeeze more and more speed out of the transmission but you are correct. Even with start and stop bits one could theoretically transmit more than 125Gb per month at 512kb/s.

so what would you recommend out there that would be better than this mockup "512kb/s uncapped @ roughly R300-400" deal?

sure, it's 10 times slower than 5000kbs (5 Mbit)... but it's uncapped, so you could download around 100 gigs per month at least?
(who gets 5Mbit on 3G anyway, and even if you did, how long is that going to last with your cap?)

edit: with a 2GB cap, 5000kbs would last you all of 1 Hour.
5000kb/s = 625KB/s = 37MB/Minute = 2.2GB/Hour

Some other subjects you need to brush up on. ;)

Start and Stop bits have got nothing to do with how many bits in a byte. Two completely different concepts.
