If CellC offered 386 or 512kbs uncapped... how much would you pay?

Some other subjects you need to brush up on. ;)

Start and Stop bits have got nothing to do with how many bits in a byte. Two completely different concepts.

You're right of course. On the other hand they still need to be sent if they are still used and that will reduce the actual data that can be sent in a given time period.

There are actually a number of different headers, wrappers, checksums, etc. that get sent with your data package, reducing the amount of payload your data bundle carries. For more 'interactive' protocols (like VoIP) this can be quite a bit. For protocols using bigger sliding windows and MTUs, not so much. But it not just an extra bit here and there, quite a few bytes per payload in fact.

On Telkom do uncapped you can d/l a max of 250gigs of torrents on their 1Mb line, and it goes for about R650/pm inc line .

Isn't it closer to 800.00 all in all?
Line rental, ADSL rental and the data portion?

Uncapped is an excuse for a minority to rape the networks. And download stuff just because they can.

Do you rape your tap water.... that's practically unlimited? do you waste it, just because you can?
If you look at 90% of users in other countries, they don't actually try to download the internet....

MTN offer it.
We just need to get more Networks to do it as well, so some competition can start - It's time for South Africa to get out of the 2GB Bundle limit ffs.

For 512 I'd pay R99pm.
I think less speed should be less charge.

Firstly, you couldn't GIVE me a connection throttled to 512kb/s capped or uncapped. It would be like watching paint dry. :)

The maximum data you would be able to transfer in a month at 512kb/s is between 4 and 5 Gb and that would mean you would virtually have to be connected 24/7 with no hiccups at all. CellC offers the equivalent of that deal at the moment. For the equivalent of R375/month you get 5Gb/month. The catch is one has to pay R4499 for the year up front. For R599 you can get 3Gb valid for a year with the modem thrown in effectively giving you a modem for R224. I paid significantly less than that when the 60Gb/year deal was on promo but I will be more than happy to pay R4499 for 60Gb spread over a year when my present deal runs out.

If you want to pay monthly you can get 3Gb/month for R400 and that will bring you fairly close to 512kb/s uncapped.

Speaking for myself, if I was prepared to have my connection throttled to 512kb/s I would expect to achieve that speed 24/7 for both upload and download. Speed does, of course, depend on many factors but where I live I get over 7Mb/s download and 2Mb/s upload during off-peak times. Today's a public holiday and I have just measured 7.46Mbps up and 2.05Mbps down at 12:30. On a normal weekday I would expect a minimum of about between 2 - 3 Mbps down and about 1Mbps up at this time of day. Most often it is quite a bit higher than that.

Yo man, not to be funny or anything but I have a 512k uncapped telkom wimax with mweb uncapped isp, and I have done over 150gb per month as the previous poster said...it might not be fastest internet connection out there, but it can pack a serious amount of GBs per month.

I agree, the first 3months of having uncapped internet I clocked about 120-150gb per month, after that I ran out of things to download lol...now I average probably round about 5gb a month, maybe its different with other peeps, but seriously there's only SO much things you can think of to download...afterwards I think ISPs score all the way...as I said I probably do about 5gb per month max now... and I'm paying R299 to M-web for about 5gb pm lol? Rip off? I think not.......freedom means the world.
