Preventing foreign citizens from voting..

Will the ANC try to push through a bill only allowing single citizenship, like Zimbabwe did?

So if you currently hold - say dual citizenship with Netherlands, the law would say "Bugger off, or relinquish your Dutch citizenship"?

I'm just thinking hypothetically, 'cos it would be in the ANC's best interests to prevent as much foreign citizens from voting as is possible.

Just shooting in the breeze...

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did. There are no lengths the ANC won't go to hold on power.

How are they going to prove that a person has dual citizenship?

iirc the ANC/gvmnt has already said sumthin to the effect that dual citizenship would not be allowed. it's been over a year - don't know what came of the issue. don't think it's law or anything, possibly unconsitutional which may be why nuthin came of it.

ok found a clarification of the issue,
The government has appealed to South Africans with dual citizenship to use their South African passports when leaving or returning to the country.

According to the South African Citizenship Amendment Act of 2004, that came into effect on 15 September, it is now an offence for locals with dual citizenship to use their foreign passports to leave or gain entry to the country.

It is also an offence for a citizen, while in South Africa, to use his or her foreign citizenship to gain advantage or avoid a responsibility or duty, says the Department of Home Affairs.

However, the new Act allows South Africans with dual nationality to freely use their foreign passports outside South Africa.

The court ruled that South African citizens temporarily outside the country i.e. on Visa's in other country's (with intention to come back to SA), should be allowed to vote.

So basically if you've applied for and received citizenship or permanent residence of another country you wouldn't be allowed to vote. Dunno how that affects dual-citizenship though...

Well, thats what some professor on E-news said....

In short the IEC is farked. And the constitution requires the election to happen by June...unless parliament signs a special bill for this one.

People apply for permanent residence because their stay may be longer than the period covered by a visa.

Simplest way to deal with the whole deal is to say that having a ZA ID document gives you one vote and you get an additional vote for every R1000 you paid in tax to SARS.

I feel most of people concerns regarding the ANC has become extremely fictional! While the ANC is suffering from a lot of corruption and what most people view as bad leadership, it has never ever directly tried to alter the constitution purely to hold on to power....

It is wrong of us to waste our time debating fictions that pop out of any tom, dick and harry's head! Just watch the news and start debating real issues, rather than thinking the ANC is some baboon cage that's full of non-thinking species, coz its not...

How else would you explain the continued economical growth under its leadership??? Yes, more can be done in Telecommunication, but we're ranked 35th in the world when it comes to telecommunication! That is not too bad for a country ran by "baboons" now is it!

I think that has more to do with sanctions being lifted and the private sector being allowed to trade freely with anyone in the world.

Just look at the state of the public sector which is under government control and you will see the ANC's impact.

It is a problem when a senior figure like Baleke says that Democracy inhibits government actions, and that she prefers a one-party state.

I'm sorry, the mere fact that the ANC forms an alliance with the communist party is worry in itself.
