Foreigners descended on the UN High Commission for Refugees' (UNHCR) office in Cape Town from Tuesday, trying to convince officials that they need safe passage out of SA.
Crowds gathered outside the offices again on Wednesday, with some saying they weren't going to leave until the UN helped them.
“The xenophobia has become so bad. We can't live our lives,” said a Tanzanian woman, cradling a baby. “Now we have to go home.”
A Burundian man said they had been “let down” by the UN, which had failed to protect them from xenophobic violence and had not ensured they were issued with the documentation required to live a productive life.
“We are just forgotten about. We are nothing to anyone,” he said.
Neither home affairs nor the UNHCR responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.

I bet the Nigerians who left are already back in SA, looks to me like people just want a free ride to visit family.

You're exempt - just like everyone else that came in legally and is actually contributing to the SA economy.
The blacks from neighboring countries and far off African countries here illegally should just piss off already.

"foreigners demand UN help"

Demand nogal, seems they've been fully integrated into ZA, already standing around with cupped hands and entitlement!

They are from the rest of Africa, so not really fully integrated into ZA. They didn't need to fully integrate.

Petrol and transport is a expensive. Remember, they are in SA now, they follow their SA comrades in demanding everything for free.

They can present themselves to the Lindela repatriation centre for a free ride home anytime if they so badly wish to go home.

The comments on this thread are quite sickening.

These are not illegal immigrants that are looking for safe passage (or a safe environment), these are people that have obtained refugee status due to conditions in their own country, and yet the Department of Home Affairs has done nothing to issue them with the correct papers.

They are currently in the country legally (they did everything they were supposed to obtain the refugee status) and yet home affairs, being inept as it usually is, has not been able to give them the correct papers.

I know one guy from the DRC who came here on refugee status 10 years ago and he is constantly going to home affairs and the consulate to get his status changed to permanent resident and get his ID book and registration but they keep coming up with excuses. so all that happens is they extend his refugee status documentation. After 5 years he should already be naturalized if they did things correctly and give him permanent residence, and yet he is also one that has to watch his back every time he goes home.

The Xenophobia attacks are not happening only to illegal's, it is also happening to immigrants who have come here through the correct channels.

I for one am glad they have gone to the UNHRC, because hopefully the plight will be brought before the world so that the government and Department of Home Affairs can sort out their **** and start managing our borders and document control for migrants and foreigners correctly.
