If smoking is so bad for you, why doesn't it kill you faster?

I know a few people that have been smoking since before they were 18 and they are not dead yet, and these are folks that are between 40 and 50.

Why don't they die faster? Smoking is claimed to be very harmful but it sure does not look like that to me.

My wife should take you to her hospital and show you the patients slowly suffocating to death because their lungs's efficiency is shot thanks to years of smoking. It's not a good way to go.

Then you get emphysema, lung cancer and all the other health issues brought on by smoking. I find it a bit difficult to believe that there are still people out there that won't believe how unhealthy smoking is.

Its a slow killer... They will start suffering in their late 50's and 60's... then its game over...

It affects each person differently.

Something that really pisses me off is this: My brother-in-law has had too many bypass ops to mention and too many stents put in to mention, apparantly his one vein is basically just made up of that.

He was in hospital last Friday again (Intensive care and they flushed his veins this time - a new procedure). He was at our place on Sunday, smoking away. WTF is all I can say.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_tobacco#Mortality:

Male and female smokers lose an average of 13.2 and 14.5 years of life, respectively.

According to the results of a 50 year study of 34,486 male British doctors, at least half of all lifelong smokers die earlier as a result of smoking.

Smokers are three times as likely to die before the age of 60 or 70 as non-smokers.

Best to look at your family history to determine if you are likely to get cancer. If there are cancer cases in your family best you quit asap.

Look, I hate smoking, actually that is why I was hoping it would kill people faster. Maybe if it only takes 10 years then smoking won't be hated as much?

When my aunt had cancer and went for chemo and all that, they actually told her not to stop smoking during or immediately after the procedure as withdrawal would place extra strain on her body.

It's been a couple of years and she still smokes though. Much facepalm.

Did you hear the doctors themselves say that, or did she tell you the doctors say she mustn't stop smoking?

not bad

This^^^ Highly doubt the doctors would tell her not to stop, smoking is not like herion for example where there's physical pain involved with the withdrawal, quitting smoking is mostly a battle of wills in your head, no physical strain will be placed on the body

This is almost as stupid as the "if humans evolved from monkeys then why do we still have monkeys" huuurrrrrrrrr durrrrrr line

She told us. But she also told us that they said she should quite a week or two after recovery started. I couldn't really care less though. If you're stupid enough to continue abusing something that almost killed you in a very painful manner, then you should just go ahead and free up some oxygen for the rest of us.
