If you had a 4k budget for a gfx card, would you buy now or wait?

A friend of mine has some money and is looking to get a new graphics card. He's been running an old Ryzen with an IGPU (pretty sure I spec'd a Ryzen 2200g for him) for a couple of years, and since he played older games it wasn't really an issue. Now he wants to play Doom Eternal has his current setup refuses to even launch it.

With the new 3000 series of Nvidia cards around the corner, I suggested he wait. Might see older generation cards dip a bit in price. But at the end of the day I couldn't recommend he get an Rx 580 or the equivalent Nvidia for the 4k prices they're currently going for.

I think he wants to buy new, but I was thinking he might be able to find a really good deal on Carbonite.

What would you guy suggest for someone in this situation?

Personally I would wait because my current budget is approximately 720p.

But you should also wait it out, just in case.

Nvidia usually launch their top end gpus first with the budget models following several months later.

R4k does not get you a lot new but used you can pick up something decent for that price on carb.

This.

I'd rather get something used and more capable on carb. R4k will get you a pretty low-end card new.

To add, the exchange rate isn't looking positive for the coming year and who knows what brain-dead schemes is implemented for raising additional taxes, a second hand card now is probably a better choice

Buy now, sure you can get a brand new Rx570 / Rx580 or 1650 / 1660 for that. The new generation will start with high end released first and only later mid and low range normally not always.

New card prices are bonkers. I don't see myself buying anywhere but Carbonite for the foreseeable future. Even then, secondhand prices are creeping upwards.
