I struggled with this but finally found a solution for those who need to print anything from their iphone/ipads to a non airprint printer.
Unfortunately you need a desktop/laptop on and connected to the printer via wifi or USB etc.

Install printer drivers on laptop.
Share Printer.
Make sure printer and iphone/ipad on same wifi.
Download and install Apple Bonjour Printing Services - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999

Download this - http://cdn.jaxov.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Windows_AirPrint_Installer_iOS_5_for_x86_x64.zip
Right-click install file and install as Administrator.
Double click x32 or x64 reg file.
Install Airprint Service.
AirPrint Auth - Guest
Enable Guest Account - ticked.
The service will use your local username and password.
Allow through firewall.

On iphone/ipad try print anything - select printer - any shared printer you have installed should show up.
There will be a lock next to them - choose a printer then enter your local username and password.
then select - Print
the above settings worked for me on 3x laptops and 2 pairs of ipads.

I use to use a Raspberry Pi model B+raspbian+cups to turn both my USB only laser printers in to AirPrint, network enabled printers.

You can use HandyPrint

Very nice program but Mac only, there used to be fingerprint for Windows which worked well but they cancelled that project.
All others I tried required an app of some sorts.
