Wow. I had never heard of them before. We always use Avis and never had issues.

Any particular reason for going for less known rental companies ?

They have amazing service and being an independent company you don't have to deal with over bloated corporate nonsense.

Thrifty now renamed to Sani Rentals? https://sani.co.za/

Previously used Avis and Europcar for the FNB and Discovery discounts, but for a few rentals in Cape Town recently they had no cars available so I used Sani and was pleasantly surprised in terms of pricing and service.

But force, Avis (FNB deal) but they like to give you lower tier cars than what was booked.

Prime example, was this past weekend, booked Group P, but was offered the keys to a group C. After telling the guy behind the counter, sorry, but I paid for Group P (which is according to Avis, a guaranteed model) they upgraded me to group K (mini SUV) instead.

Tempest (essentially Europcar) cos I get a discount when booking with through Discovery travel.

Other: whoever is cheapest for that specific trip

last rental was with First Car Rental purely because I flew with FlySafair and their collab with First made that rental cheaper than the others

Have used Pace Car Rental & even Tavcor.
Both priced reasonably & excellent service

Last time I rented a car was October '23 in Cape Town and Woodford was by far the cheapest for a 7 seater.
I always price shop though. I don't have a preferred brand.

Europcar or Budget. Any but Avis, as I had trouble with them both times I have used them

Work - budget/avis

Myself- long distance driving -single trip - budget/avis vs long term 1 month rental etc - cheap place Paarden Eiland, where the car smell funny.

Europcar, because Discovery. The only company from that list I would never use is First Car Rental (part of the CMH Group).
