I 'won' travel vouchers from a company called Itravel and all I have to do is sit through their session explaining 'how to use the vouchers' since they are doing this "for promotion of their brand".

Yeah right. How desperate are these timeshare okes going to get?

Go to the *session*.

Ask nicely for the voucher.

Ask again.

Reveal, in a loud voice, that you are from the media and that you are there to expose their scam.

They probably sell shares in a holiday club. Not points, but SHARES, so technically, their statement is correct, but they are still trying to sell you something.

There aren't "TIMESHARE" they sell points and you use your points to go on holiday.. See? NOT TIME SHARE!!!

Under no obligation to to buy anything to use your vouchers? Well then the vouchers are proabably meal vouchers for once you are on the ship. Or vouchers for room on the boat, but you still have to buy your ticket onto the boat.. or some scammy thing like that.

Also, I haven't been to any of these, but I heard that they sell pretty f___kin hard! They practically lock the doors adn tell you that you cant leave until you have bought in!

I agree, They wouldn't be able to sell me something I didn't want. BUT then there are those people who are of weaker mind and constitution. I am sure that there is probably one in every ten people who would fold and that one person probably makes it worth their while.

Since when did time shares become a scam? My dad pays R1000 a year and then gets to go almost anywhere in SA for a whole week. How is that a scam? Or have they changed the way it works these days?

Its only a scam since they sell high expectations that are almost impossible to meet. Google RCI and people trying to sell their points to hear about how they are pressured into signing contracts that cannot be cancelled and how they can almost never find openings at the resorts they want to go to since it is alwyas "occupied".

You cant have x amount of resorts and then try and tell 100000x people they can all share the place and go anytime they want to - obviously there are space limitations. If you neglect to mention this at the sales time and then get people to sign contracts they are unable to get out of, I regard it as a scam.

same with my parents, time share actually works if

- you book well in advance
- you dont have kids and dont have to holiday during school holidays

me and my girlfriend have been on 3 holidays which cost us basically nothing using my parents spaced banked weeks, but we book well in advance and we don't go during school holidays (peak periods)

I’m unfortunately one of the dodos referred to in here. I’m a meticulous person that reads the terms and conditions.

Things worked great but last two years it really became a money pit. Still have the points and annual fees but the extras you have to pay in these days are exuberant, it now cost me more than a normal self paid holiday.

Tried for the last 2 years to get out, it’s nasty and your only relief is to get a lawyer involved.

Stay away guys... and girls.

There is a huge difference between proper time share and what these scammers sell. My dad bought two weeks of proper timeshare with an RCI affiliated resort (Pine Lake Marina on the Garden Route). Other than going there, we have stayed all over the world in GREAT accommodation. And staying at those places cost nothing more than the R750 or so admin fee that RCI charges. RCI is not bad at all. You do have to book WELL in advance but that's understandable.

Proper timeshare where you buy allocated weeks in the year for a specified resort is fine! The problem is nowadays they sell these vacation club points. Where you are not tied into any resort over a specific week, all you get are points that you can then apply to a holiday. Its a great scam, because previously where your sales cap for a resort was was number of units in resort times number of weeks in the year... you can now sell points valued WAY WAY WAY past that.. the fact that your members cant actually get accommodation for their points.. well that's their problem.. the vacation club salesman's only problem is what to do with all that money??
