Imate JASJAR is twang

Can't believe these guys - I have an Imate SP2 and have recently worked on a friend's Jasjar. Initially i enjoyed it and it comes with 3g and Wifi.

BUT!!!!!

They went badly south with the pocketPC side of things. It has 64Megs of RAM! IE combined o/s, applications and general storage = 64 megs. Yes you can add an sd card for storage, but it doesn't help you run apps when you have a couple running already. Skype, for example, frequently won't start without you first visiting the memory applet in control panel to exit other running programs. Just after initial boot-up, at least 32 megs of RAM is used for OS already. My Imate SP2 uses 14 megs on boot.

With 128 megs of RAM on my SP2, I have no such problems. They made a BAAAAD judgement call on this one.

This is just one of those things I feel so strongly about - I hate to see people spend good money and get rubbish... we already do that enough with Telkom

Smaller OS no doubt. This thing comes with all the bells and whistles, so RAM available on boot up is minimal. Do you use Skype on your Dell? It works fine if all you want is a calendar and email. 2 megapixel cam is built in to the jasjar - and you know how big a 2 megapixel jpg can be.

Don't get anything with less than 128 meg if you develop. But I guess the big thing is available RAM after bootup. I just can't get over how they can think of fitting 32 megs of active progs / operating system on a 64 meg total machine. To give you an idea - the flash Rom is 128 megs... figure that - rom is twice RAM. I am very happy with my Imate SP2 - plenty of RAM available, plus my SD card. My Rom is 64 meg. The general features on the Jasjar are quite something - the Wifi works well, 3g too - Camera is great, but the thing slows to a crawl in no time when you use it for other than the calendar, mail and basics. I just don't get it - with the price of Ram these days, why 64? Why not start looking at 512 megs on portable items? Or are there issues with addressing these numbers on a smaller device (I wouldn't think so). Portable manufacturers must be working on such tight budgets to be that stingy.

Great features, but frustrating for the PDA power user. I tried it with a piece of mapping software I had and couldn't get it to work as the software can't open files from SD card for some reason (prob. the gui) - and the map files were too big to store in RAM on the unit without using up precious space.

Also... with the built in O/S, you can't adjust RAM for storage vs program space as you can with WME 2003... don't know why.

My JAM only has 64MB as well, but downloaded a little freeware app called Switch from FreewarePPC.com - http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/switch.shtml (beware ads) - very very handy indeed, the phone wouldnt be nearly as easy to use without it.

i agree with Ed, sure your dell pda only has 64MB but did u purchae it for 12 and a half grand??
dam i mean really now the device is aimed at power users but they are offering inferior mem?!?! unacceptable, so yes they made a very bad call on that

Has anyone checked the CPU's specs?

I read some reviews months ago when Skype (for PPC) was still taking off.
Most reviewers aired their doubts about the K-Jam (HTC Wizard) handling Skype (or any other resource intensive app for that matter) due to the CPU it uses.

Compared to other devices running WM5 its kina "slow".

Not sure if this will make a difference.
Just my 2 cents.

The K-Jam has a 195 Mhz processor as opposed to the Jasjar which has a 520 Mhz processor ...

I have one. Battery is not excellent anymore but the phone is in a good condition.

It's got Windows Mobile 6 installed on it. Works like a charm.
