Electricity price plans will punish solar users

The implementation of a new fixed charge for prepaid customers in Johannesburg could just be the beginning of proposed electricity price adjustments that would dramatically increase South African solar power users' bills.

While City Power has angered numerous Joburg residents with its new R230 fixed charge for prepaid users starting from July 2024, many other municipalities — including the City of Cape Town — have already adopted similar fees.

Mybroadband, do an article on the procedures and costs to disconnect a house completely from the different municipalities and secondly how much a solar backup system would cost and what is required for different usages per month.
Extra tips: Get a gas stove, geyser on only during the day, washing only in daytime....

They did. "South Africa" in the article representented Jhb and Pretoria only and Jhb said they will send you a quote and Pretoria said it is free.

One part of your question. Sure to have changed by now, but should be a good starting point for an estimate.

I’m an Eskom direct client and have always paid a monthly connection/service fee, currently at R200 per Month.

do folks remember when we were using telkom landlines?
There was a fixed and a variable charge, because there was also a line that had to be maintained, even if you made no calls.

Eskom has had a fixed charge for many large consumers for years.

I can't understand that people can't grasp this?

In our present situation, the energy cost (kWh) should be reduced, in order to make the average bill the same as before the fixed charge was introduced

Exactly. Fixed costs for prepaid users screws everyone over whether you have solar or not.
The screwing started when they started with the post paid okes after managing just fine for 90 years. Now its spreading because the post paid okes just bent over and let it happen at the time.

Yes, I also remember paying 10c/kWh with no monthly "line" fee.
