What will be the impact of the new adsl regulations for Vodacom subscribers? Will Vodacom also offer free local data for all their users? They market their services as comparable to adsl so they actually should. Also if adsl access charges falls away it would make mobile data more expensive even for very small amounts of data. Vodacom chose to compare their HSDPA with adsl so they have to respond to this with a REAL price decrease.

They won't do anything reason beacause it's a mobile company the icasa regulations is only opt for adsl lines. when will they do it? when virgin or mtn starts giving free local bandwith or a more competitive market to their subscribers then vodacom will have to reduce prices or do something to keep their market alive.

EDIT - it does not fall in the same leuge

I doubt that much will happen until Telkodemonopolies gets its act together and starts reducing the ADSL installations backlog & waiting time - IMO ATM that's the primary reason for consumers giving up waiting for ADSL and going for a wireless service instead...

The icase regs is only for adsl, but Vodacom and the other networks are competing in the adsl arena. So if Telkom has to drop their double line rental charges and give local bandwidth for free and do all this within 30 days of the service being requested they will have to respond to that. Not to mention Iburst and Sentech also responding to the pressure it would leave Vodacom with a lot less people using their service. The service is competing in the adsl arena so they must have some kind of response. Atm they are probably still in the head scratching stage like everyone else.

I don't think the mobile networks planned to compete with ADSL. They were just lucky that Telkom kept ripping us off. Their market is focused on the mobile user. They know that the high ADSL prices will (hopefully) be a thing of the past once the SNO and EASSY cable is fully up and running.

hi

Telkom is a major shareholder of Vodacom, so it is unlikely that Vodacom will reduce rates sufficiently to attract subscibers away from adsl. just my 2c

Then we never should have dropped 3G prices in the first place.

there are so many people connected to VMobile that vodacom aint going to worry about prices changes

Actually Vodacom was the first to charge R2/meg. Whether it was actually a preemptive strike or not I wouldn't know. But since Vodacom is now competing in the adsl arena it is in their best interest to continue to attract customers.

That does not mean that R2/ MB is market related or that we have a well regulated & competitive telecommunications industry.

I doubt there will be free local bandwith, if they do theres so many ways to cut costs.

v3g, what happened to the proposal of a while ago for a local "mirror" or download server to which Vodacom customers can get free or very low priced access?

Well to kickstart this, I would like to suggest that free local-to-Vodacom content should include all the ~50MB+ VMC downloads, as well as firmware etc.

Next, some popular Linux distro iso images, and any other Open Source s/w, e.g. OpenOffice2 for both Windoze and Linux...

Firefox
Thunderbird

No, but they were the first to make a major price reduction and now they are lagging behind with MTN and now others reducing their prices just after Vodacom so as to be cheaper than Vodacom most of the time.

But to get back on topic. V3g, will Vodacom react to the changes or will they simply allow their 'accidentally' acquired market share to drop? If isps can demand free local bandwidth from Telkom what would be the chances of Vodacom being able to demand the same since it isn't offering adsl?

The fact that they can apparently reduce prices at will smacks of profitering. Why do companies always charge as much as they can as opposed to what something is worth.

Unfortunately this is a sickening cycle that is eating through our economy.
