Hey guys

I was told the import tax of a phone on ebay for example is 10% the value of the phone. Is this accurate? If so, what value do they use, the purchasing cost or the cost of the phone in SA?

Thanks

He's incorrect.

Duties and taxes are easily looked up.

Every product has an HS code (Harmonized Standardization Code), which states the duties and taxes for that item.
HS Code for mobile phones is 8517.12.906

There is no duty payable on Mobile Phones, just Tax @ 14%

SARS document here:
http://www.sars.gov.za/AllDocs/Lega...4 - Schedule No 1 Part 1 Chapters 1 to 99.pdf

His shipper may be arbitrarily adding fee's and what not, but customs will not charge random fee's unless the goods aren't brought in under the right classification code (in this case 8517.12.906)

You likely will however have issues with ICASA, as all radio devices require ICASA type certification, so if you buy a phone that isn't sold here, and doesn't have type certification, they may impound it until you pay for type certification testing.

When was that published in the government gazette, as I'm not seeing it on the usual sites.

eg http://www.ftwonline.co.za/customs/8948/8517-12

A look at SARS site shows only the 2012 Schedules in place, the 2017 ones haven't been implemented yet (implementation date is 1 January 2017)

http://www.sars.gov.za/Legal/Primary-Legislation/Pages/HS-2017.aspx

As far as I'm aware, tariff amendments need to be published in the gazette first.
Curious...

If its been published in the gazette, then its a valid tariff..
My other advice still applies.

Strange I haven't noticed it though, I usually browse the SA Customs Buzz emails and take note of things that affect stuff..
