Good day my fellow ADSL friends and Internet enthusiasts,

It is with a heavy heart that I look at the current state of affairs in South Africa with regard the Internet today. On the one hand, one has to sit up and smile about the fact that broadband has hit the southern tip of Africa. Yet on the other hand, one has to bemoan the fact that there is very little understanding and foresight on behalf of decision makers with regard to extending the blessings of affordable communication to those who cannot afford the one thousand odd Rand a month to be connected to the net twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

I have to look at the splendid advantages the rest of the world are gaining through simple always on connectivity, while we in the third world have to hang on to the proverbial hind tit. Contrary to common belief, it is not the fault of the overseas fat cats! No, my friends, we have nobody else to blame but our own homegrown decision makers who are tiny fat cats all by themselves. We have to fight and struggle to keep a small fraction of consumer dignity in the whole ADSL debacle in this country, but let us not forget those who are less fortunate than we are. Not because we are so drastically advantaged, but because they are so drastically disadvantaged. Why are there no 24/7 dialup internet connectivity product options provided by Telkom? Why are there no 24/7 ISDN connection product options available from Telkom?

An always-on connection does not depend on ADSL availability! We have hundreds of thousands of lines all over the country, which can be easily made available at a flat fee for always on Internet connectivity to those who want it. Yes, the rollout of broadband is extremely important in this country, but we need to wipe out the increasing digital divide between the 3rd world and the 1st, by providing primarily affordable, always on Internet connectivity to the entry-level Internet users of this country!

Thus, let us fight the fight for fair ADSL service and hand in hand with our noble fight not neglect our duty to drag our neighbors into the 21st Century as well…

Regards,
Antowan

I agree! How long have I wanted to be on 24/7 back when I could not afford a broadband option. A 24/7 56k service should of been offered long ago! The SNO better brighten the future of everyone in south africa.
