Important emergency numbers in South Africa

With one of the highest crime rates in the world and more than 2,700 road accidents per day, your chances of landing in a life-threatening emergency in South Africa are relatively high.

Mobile phones make it easy to get help quickly but for some it's difficult to know who to call.

From a young age, many South Africans are taught to dial the 10111 number to contact the police for assistance or when reporting a crime.

Emergency number means absolutely nothing if public services are non-existent. You are lucky if someone answers the phone, and you are even more lucky if you get someone to pitch up within 2 hours.

112 in East London will get you nowhere of you need fire services. You get through to the ambulance department of you follow instructions for fire. And no, they can't transfer you, they can only give you the actual number. All because someone hasn't updated the switchboard
