Usa ps2 games are nstc,Japanese games are nstc-J,europern games are pal.

Without a mod chip or a nstc machine, the game won't play on your ps2(all systems sold here are the Pal ps2 system)
All games show what system it will run on in the front and the back of the cover.

You might find that the locking is due to formats rather than region coding - The US is NTSC while our region is PAL. Unless you've had your console chipped then I dont think a NTSC one will work.

If however you import from, for example, the UK Amazon site it will work here.

EDIT - and playkiller no.2 beats me to the post. :)

Try looking at www.cd-wow.com, it's a UK/HK company that stocks PAL and NTSC stuff. Prices are reasonable and international delivery is free. I use them for music and a lot of guys use them for Xbox games.
