Importing the most affordable Tesla from the UK to South Africa would cost R1.5 million

The UK is the closest Tesla market to South Africa with RHD models, making it the cheapest option for importing one.

Slight correction here, Australia is. Roughly 3000 kilos (give or take) less than the UK.

What is the price in the USA.
They are made in the USA and then sent to the UK.

That luxury tax is so overdue for an update, you can smell it though you wouldn't exactly want to. People have been pointing it out for ages. It's becoming a public hygiene issue. It's ripe!

But our government is just sitting on their hands. Why???

Cars are a fairly important economic enabler. You can talk public transport all you want, but cars are vital too. It hardly matters that our industries are maximally protected, along with the relative handful of jobs, when everybody else is becoming poorer for it. I mean it's not like making importing more viable will have many, outside of enthusiasts, importing. That's if it's not cheaper to import.

I believe the real deal is that, though locally (there) manufactured cars tend to be seriously cheap in other countries. Our locally manufactured cars are not all that cheap here. Take Ford Rangers. First one I could think of to check. Manufactured here, manufactured in Thailand. Compare the prices on the exchange. Way more expensive here. And I was checking "specials" here vs regular price there.

R46. Local stock available.

Isn't there a cheaper African country to import it into and then you sell it to your mate who then drives it into South Africa as a 2nd hand car?

UK okes (re: Naaiers) have it incredibly lucky:

I’ve mentioned on a few occasions that the UK 2nd hand vehicle market is the best in the world ito value, pricing & variety and yup better than Murica, Canada, Oz, Germany, any other Euro country, HK, Japan, China & other country in the mix.

Locally manufactured cars are usually cheaper in the countries where the brand owners are. What brands that we own are produced here en masse?

I just want to be able to import JDM cars 🥲
What are the import laws in SA these days? Just bring in whatever you want in RHD, pay your dues and you’re done?

Tthe other problem is a Tesla's are geofenced. You can't even update the OS if you are in a country Tesla doesn't support.

Why on earth import a Tesla when one can get a Byd that does the same thing with at least some dealer support in the country, and for around R1m. Tesla thought they were the iPhone of cars but the Chinese will soon make them as irrelevant (in modern times) as a Nokia. Only the US tariff situation will save them hence EM’s desperation to polish DT’s behind with tongue.
