I know the MD of Payfast very well and will personally ask him for more input with regards to this article next time I see him on one of our hikes
Something doesn't add up here

You need to take into account a lot more businesses started using payfast for payment processing as well, moving their brick and mortar store to online. Even if general Black Friday spend at most stores was the same as the previous year, the added stores would increase revenue/volume.

also doesn't add up to me, people are trying to survive, not buy TV's and Cars during a time when there are so many retrenchments.
and the economy is in the doldrums.

maybe the growth were seeing is due to people staying home and buying noodles online, and not TV's?
or maybe its due to people simply working from home a lot more, and simply deciding to save time and do everything online.
including grocery shopping or things they normally did in person?

dont believe it was that great of a Black Friday event,

Black Friday was trash this year, no one I know bought anything than coffee or gin on special, where last year most splurged on bigger purchases, me included. I agree the growth is likely just a change in spending patterns than actual growth. @Papa Smurf will have to get to the bottom of this.

Same here normally spend a lot didn’t buy anything except for a car but that was a given as previous one was written off by someone.
Normally a TV here and there for the staff but even told them nothing special

only deal that was maybe noteworthy was the air fryer makro had

I brought a rechargable electric toothbrush that was discounted to 50% (but only because I looked properly for it)
and a SD card 64 GB for R149,

earlier before BF, I put my hands on a Android phone normally 6K got it for 1,7K.
(still got the wrong colour though).

and saw the deals, really lousy, 20% off isnt a deal,
I dont think they even understand what BF really is, its getting rid of the old in preparation for the new.

not taking the stuff they already have, and selling it for 20% less and calling it MASSIVE DEAL.

BF this year is actually Fake deals all round.

Maybe they are tenants who have been saving their rental money to spend on BF?

or maybe its due to people simply working from home a lot more, and simply deciding to save time and do everything online.
This bit.
Lots of us spend a few grand a month on petrol, even the increased electricity and water cost since permanently at home doesn't match the savings.
Then for quite a few months, lots were not going out, so all those budgets that were for restaurants etc. were not spent.
Lots of people that would have moved out of home didn't as can't get a new place to rent, so would have increased savings.

That would not match the people that lost jobs, but it would mean some people do have more money to "splurge", while a lot of stuff also moved online.

Splurge? or what? 6 X 2L cokes? case of 2 min noodles?
or on a New TV and a PS5?

again, its the WHAT you brought, not you brought Biltong on BF, that makes you a BF shopper.
