Simplistic. This needs a response.
Two factors were inhibiting this achievement, effectively preventing tens of thousands of candidates from gaining entry to engineering and all the other high skill career options which the country so desperately needs. The first constriction on the number of HG passes was that many schools simply did not offer Maths at this level, if at all. The second problem was that many schools who did offer HG Maths persuaded the majority of students to take it on the easier standard grade level, even though large numbers of them passed with A, B or C symbols (60% or higher).

No excuse, look at the vast chasm between the maths literacy paper and that of the HG paper.
Achieving a 100% mark in Maths literacy does not mean you will even pass the HG paper.

Is this guy seriously telling me that by excluding circle geometry in Paper 2, and replacing it with simplistic statistics (median, mode etc.), that the standard remained the same? I don't think so.

Lowering the Matric standards doesn't allow more people into the engineering fields, it degrades the field and wastes more money sending people to do courses that they would have been unable to do in the first place.

The education system is a big problem now and I think that entrance exams should be standard requirement now, possibly even mandatory bridging courses for a year before the proper beginning of a degree.

I think they are.

You should see how busy UNISA was this year at registrations ... apart from the fact that more matrics qualified for university entrance this year, UNISA doesn't have any apart from a matric certificate.

I weep for my future degree.

The problem with the matric results is that alot of the results are doctored to look good.
When i had to go study for my Bsc, I first had to pass entrance exam, because most of the university , college's and Tec's. Don't hold our matric results in high regard.

I luckily don't have that problem. I wrote my exams back when men were men, exams were exams, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri :D

[yes, that was shamelessly plagiarised from Hitchhikers' Guide :p]
