Incredible Connection's plan to take on Amazon

Many South Africans already buy computer hardware and other tech products from Amazon, and with the company potentially launching a local marketplace, tech retailers could lose out on sales.

MyBroadband asked several online tech retailers in the country how they are preparing for the launch of Amazon's South African marketplace.

Well, when Amazon lands here, I will not have to import the stuff I typically buy from Amazon and are difficult to find locally, so that will be a plus.

Why is IC trying to "take on" Amazon? They should try "take on" other local online retailers first. The fact that I don't even consider them an option when thinking about buying ... well anything ... online is a testament to the fact that they need to aim a little lower and concentrate on nipping at the heels of someone like loot, when they gain traction there they could possibly aim a little higher at Takealot.

Competing with Amazon when your brand has little to no traction is just silly.

Aftersales service only works is you make sales in the first place

And looking at how Amazon aggressively prices their products and South Africans willingness to buy the cheapest on the shelf I do no see Incredible corruption needing aftersales services

I have to say some Tech salesmen are really terrible. The stuff they tell clients.

Many want people to spend R30-40k for a laptop while they only need maybe a R10k laptop.

Its like watching the Bates 2000 video from Onion.

And no, you DONT NEED A GTX graphics card for doing spreadsheets and word-processing. So to try to get a granny to buy a pc with a GTX graphics card for chatting to her grandkids online or sending emails or doing her budget is a big NO NO.

And oh....
Decent onboard graphics is on the same level these days as a GT730 graphics card. So no need to sell a GT710 graphics card to a kid, whose onboard graphics is faster.

This, "up selling " to get a better commision, has lost Incredible Connection a few sales, I know what I want and need, run into one of those, I just walk out.

It's just a marketplace, not a proper Amazon store. So 3rd party retailers will be selling their stuff on the platform, using Amazon for logistics. Like what Takealot already does...

Was glad to see a non-twitter related thread on MYBB, but now I am unsure after reading the article.

Incredible Connection is part of the JD Group which launched EveryShop in order to compete with the likes of Takealot. And what a huge success that was! Not!!

If they can't even compete with Takealot and failed with Everyshop, how are they going to compete with Amazon. I think even Takealot is going to have stiff competition.

What you don't consider is if Amazon might buy Takealot. Bezos hates paying tax so is just trying to grow and could easily afford buying takealot. The founders might be trying to sell to Amazon behind the scenes.
