I've been here for 3 days in the capital (Delhi) and have spoken to colleagues about their DSL and general data experience...
No EDGE / 3G - only vanilla GPRS. Towers report edge, but speeds are around 56k max.
DSL is relatively cheaper (2000 rupees for uncapped 256k) and you can get the DSL portion seperately... no need to rent analog. And they have a choice of SP's...
however...
Service is relatively poor. The guys at our office have 5-6 256k lines connected using bridging and fail-over software - not just for speed, but for backup when lines go down... which is apparently regularly.
I hope Tata have a plan somewhat better than the Indian setup for SA otherwise we are in for the same old (which I have suspected)

Complaints about India's broadband indicate there is not too much difference at this stage....

R 340 for an uncapped 256kbps connection - that's much better than what we have here.
Is that for the line and ISP charges?

India had a sort of soft form of socialistic centralised system, a bit like
SA today, and that for 40 years or so, they nailed themselves and since
a few years that system has been thrown overboard and things are
starting to move real fast now, don't forget it's 25 / 30 times
the population of SA but from the top 100 semiconductor related companies
worldwide, there is not a single one who did not invest in India and things
start to move, don't you worry about TATA, they will have solid technology,
i would be more worried about how long they are prepared to accept
the daily hassle of the other shareholders.
The guy who is in charge here is actually one of the best and he would for
any SA company in telecom be a great manager to have at the steeringwheel
