JAKARTA - Indonesia is set to vote on a plan to outlaw gay and pre-marital sex while beefing up its blasphemy laws in a shakeup fuelled by religious conservatism and slammed by rights groups Thursday.
The proposed criminal law overhaul could affect millions in the world's biggest Muslim majority country, including heterosexual couples who might face jail for having sex outside wedlock, or having an affair.
But there are also fears it could punish the Southeast Asian nation's small LGBT community as gay marriage is not allowed in Indonesia.
"Indonesia's draft criminal code is disastrous not only for women and religious and gender minorities, but for all Indonesians," said Andreas Harsono, senior Indonesia researcher at Human Rights Watch.
"Lawmakers should remove all the abusive articles before passing the law," he added. Updating Indonesia's criminal code - which stretches back to the Dutch colonial era - has been debated for decades.

So I have mixed feelings about this.

I for one feel that less extramarital sex will have a positive effect on a society as a whole. For various reasons.

However, I don't believe it should be legislated. For one thing, that will often have the opposite intended effect. Look what happened in the US during prohibition for example.

I don't think this is really necessary.

Just make abortions mandatory outside of marriage and you basically solve the problem.

Essentially they're dictating people's morals.

So ideally, everyone should strive for a stable marriage and have 2.1 children to keep the population going. ;-)

There are a lot of socioeconomic benefits to marriage, and a lot of society's problems can be solved with stable families. As much as I believe it's right though, I don't think that it should be legislated - for precisely this reason. People should be free to make their own choices.

Not gonna dig into all the details, have all that SO/life partner/whatever you want to call it etc, but without the 'marriage' part... I just don't buy into the needing a piece of paper/invisible man in the sky/state dictating what my relationship 'status' is... we trust and make a commitment to each other, thats all we need... under this in indonesia, it would mean we're now 'illegal' and its jail time

Yeah agreed. From a secular point of view, this is my stance 100%. I'm not the sort of religious individual who thinks it's good to impose a specific set of morals on others.

Soon they will ban masturbation.

God/Allah is so weak he/she/it needs human laws.
