Hi All

I am interested in finding out from those that used unshaped accounts what the differences and benefits are versus shaped accounts. I find that my streaming video on the Internet sometimes freezes and was wondering if an unshaped account would make things better. Also, who supplies Verizon ADSL accounts?

Thank you

Hm... I and many others have the same setup and if i remember correctly not many ppl had issues with streaming video. I recon it could be the video source/server or otherwise a degraded saix service in CT. Where are you streaming from?

I have a unshaped account which I use purely for online multiplayer gaming. My shaped account with Axxess is unusable for gaming but my ping is really good with WebAfrica's unshaped offering.

In a nut shell, shaped acounts meen that certain ports are given priority over others. Such as HTTP, FTP, POP etc are given preference over other ports used for external programs, games etc. It only makes a difference if some1 is browsing the net and say playing a game, then you will c the difference. Shaped accounts are fine if your doing either-or. Unshaped meens no ports are prioritised.

Try our unshaped ADSL account that's at R99.00 per GB (SAIX Based account) :D

I would but unused bandwidth is not carried over on that R99.00 offering. Therefore the R125.00 of Webafrica is better in that it will probably last me a couple of months. When Axxess offers their prepaid-carry-over offering, I will consider it (of course if it is cheaper.)

Been waiting for you to announce your new offering!

Ok here are the results:

Using Axxess Shaped account and Pinging www.google.com the results are:

Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=455ms TTL=236
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=459ms TTL=236
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=454ms TTL=236
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=456ms TTL=236

Ping statistics for 66.249.85.104:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 454ms, Maximum = 459ms, Average = 456ms

Using Webafrica Unshaped account and Pinging www.google.com the results are

Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=312ms TTL=238
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=311ms TTL=238
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=309ms TTL=238

So I guess that the unshaped account has 46% less round trip times ie. latency). The ISP's are irrelevant I think, but it is the two accounts I have.

I have a 384 adsl line btw.
