Innovation is the name of the game when it comes to SuperSport’s extensive live coverage of the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge – and this year is no exception.
Apart from once again having assembled a world-class commentary team -- including for the first time America’s “Voice of Golf” Peter Oosterhuis -- SuperSport have put together an action-packed broadcast package designed to keep the viewer riveted to the couch for the full four days of Africa’s Major.
While 33 cameras out on the immaculate Gary Player course will capture the ball-by-ball action as 12 of the world’s best players battle it out for a $1, 2-million first prize, the commentary booth will be crammed with some of global golf’s leading authorities.
These include Oosterhuis, American Jim Kelley, Ken Brown and Andrew Coltart from the UK, and SuperSport’s own Dale Hayes and Dave Usendorff.
This year, SuperSport introduces introduces the incisive analysis of Oosterhuis, who represented Britain in the 1967 Walker Cup and 1968 Eisenhower Trophy. He played on the European Tour in his early professional career, and won four consecutive Order of Merit titles from 1971. He was also leading money winner in 1972 and 1974.
He then moved to the US PGA Tour, which he played fulltime from 1975 to 1986, winning the Canadian Open in 1981. In all, he collected 20 victories worldwide. He was runner-up in The Open Championship in 1974 and 1982, and in 1973 led The Masters after three rounds before finishing third. He also led The Open after two rounds in 1975 before ending tied seventh. He played on six Ryder Cup teams from 1971 to 1981.
In 1998, Oosterhuis joined the CBS Sports golf announcer team fulltime and currently also serves as a contributing analyst for the Golf Channel’s Pre and Post-Game Show.
For this year’s Nedbank showpiece, SuperSport have also acquired the services, as occasional commentators, of Sun City favourite and three-time Challenge winner Nick Price, as well as former South African great Sally Little, who became a member of the US LPGA Tour in 1971, when she was Rookie of the Year, and was still playing a limited schedule in 2005. Little won 15 times on the tour, including two Majors.
As an added bonus, catch special guest Oscar Pistorius, triple gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, live in studio over the weekend.
Another SuperSport innovation this year will be live chats via the internet. For one hour every day, the commentators will go online and chat live with viewers around the world. Some of the questions and comments will then be discussed on air.
SuperSport will also launch a new style of graphics this year. Created in collaboration with our international partners, these will include a lot more historical data and interesting facts on the tournament.
Extended daily build-ups are another first. Every day, the build-up has increased to one hour, from 10am. This will feature additional highlights, analysis and behind-the-scenes footage.
