How your home's backup power can impact your insurance

South Africans with backup power systems at home must ensure that their insurance is aware of their installation and that it has been safely and correctly set up and configured.

King Price Insurance spokesperson Wynand van Vuuren recently told CapeTalk's Refilwe Moloto that those who failed to do so might not be covered in the event of a fire, flood, or power surge.

And when I called my insurance it was a song and dance for weeks to get an answer from them - they had no idea....

"it is crucial that a qualified electrician install it."

Oopsie.

"Once the installation is done, it is important to call the insurer and inform them of its cost, so your premium can be the size of the barrel you're drooped over can be adjusted accordingly."

My insurance guy did not know what an inverter was. He assumed it was a plumbing fixture. Even after sending pictures, he wanted to know which section of the policy it was to be added to, houseowner or all risks

I offered to send a copy of the COC, but he dismissed it

What if its one that plugs into the wall? Do I need an electrician for that?
No, it only refers to a fixture

What you have there is an appliance like a heater or microwave

Just call a few times to until you speak to someone who knows what a solar system is. Had the same issue my side, had to call and speak to maybe 5 people before someone know what a solar system is. Sent them my COC and pictures and its sorted

EDIT:

This is for Outsurance

Sure, but why won't you be covered for a flood? For that matter any event that is not caused by said installation? I hate insurance companies.
